Private bodies to construct cattle rehabilitation centres
PNS | Bhubaneswar
Modern cattle rehabilitation centres would be constructed through private efforts at various towns and cities of the State to rehabilitate stray cattle, informed executive director of Puducherry based Agninet organisation SK Vinoyjem.
He held discussions with the Puri Gajapati Maharaja Divyasingh Deb and some officials of the Animal Husbandry Department in this regard.
The cattle rehabilitation centres can be made profit making by using cow dung in producing electricity and bio-fertiliser and urine can be used in preparation of medicines and insecticides, said Vinoyjem to the Reporters at the Secretariat here. Under the financial assistance of Germany, a private organisation would start a project to produce electricity of 3 MW by using dung of 2,000 cattle. The first such centre would be built at Baranga to rehabilitate the cattle of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
Notably, the grazing fields in the State are not enough for 1.76 crore cattle of the State, among which about 25 lakh are stray. There is also shortage of food for the bovine population.
There are 33 cattle rehabilitation centres in the State. Among these 26 are active and other six at Balasore, Rairangpur, Jharsuguda, Jagatsinghpur and Dhenkanal are inactive. These centres should be renovated by the Government under cooperation of NGOs and SHGs, opined some social activists.
