Varun defends: I’m a Gandhi, Hindu and Indian in equal measure

Pioneer News Service | New Delhi

I am a Gandhi, a Hindu and an Indian in equal measure,” BJP leader Varun Gandhi said here on Wednesday and claimed that there was a “political conspiracy” to malign his image and the CD in question was doctored.

Even as Varun refuted making any remark against a particular community, the Election Commission issued a notice to the BJP nominee from Pilibhit and ordered to videograph all his rallies and speeches and sought a response from him over the violation of the model code of conduct.

The commission also ordered the suspensions of the Additional District Magistrate and Additional SP and shifting the DM and the SP to non-election jobs. The commission on Tuesday had directed registration of a criminal case for Varun’s inflammatory utterances.

Varun said, “I am pro-India and not anti-anybody... I want to ask the nation to stand by me.” He went on to add, “My attempt has been to restore confidence in a community that has been under siege in its own country.”

Varun alleged that in Pilibhit, Hindus were living in “fear” and “three temples have been vandalised in the block in which I am supposed to have given the speech”.

“Pilibhit is a sensitive border area. There is widespread fear; arms are being smuggled into ghettoes to be used against India,” he said. Varun said, “When things are seen out of context, there is always the danger of misunderstanding. India is a big country with a big heart. There is room in it for all to live in peace and goodwill. That is my sincere hope and effort.”

He alleged there had been attempts to brand as communal anybody “identifying with the Hindu community”, and maintained that he had not done anything to “incite hatred”.

Varun, who has taken the plunge into electoral politics from a seat that his mother Maneka Gandhi nurtured for many years, doubted the genuineness of the CD. It was supposed to have been based on a speech given on March 4 but released on March 16, he pointed out.

Varun is learnt to have clarified his stand to BJP leaders LK Advani and Rajnath Singh also.

The BJP was quick to distance itself from Varun’s reported remarks. “The party dissociates from and disapproves of the statements attributed to him. He (Varun) has himself raised questions over the statements attributed to him and the Election Commission will deal with that,” party spokesman Ravi Shanker Prasad said.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission said it had received a report of the District Election Officer, Pilibhit, on Tuesday, stating, “You (Varun) have violated the Model Code of Conduct by inciting communal feelings through your speeches.” A copy of the CD was sent to both Varun and the party.

The commission also ordered the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh to video-track all future visits, rallies and functions undertaken by Varun. The poll panel further directed that a video cameraperson with a magistrate be deputed all the time with security alongside Varun.

Bullet Let 1000s of Varun come
By Indian on 3/19/2009 10:19:56 PM

I cannot understand what is Varun's mistake. When Govt. gives scholorships to students belonging to a particular community; when the Govt. declares the 'study' of a particular religuious book to be eq as CBSE;
when PM says that a particular community has the first claim to India's resources, 'they' want 'us' to simply watch the 'game'?
We are not fools......
Let thousands of Varuns come......Let India shines....
Vandematharam.

Bullet India needs leaders like Varun Gandhi
By Dr. R.K. Sharma on 3/19/2009 8:36:09 PM

Ever since the UPA government came into power, its policies have been anti-Hindu and it promoted welfare and upliftment of minorities only. Hindus have been ignored in every sphere and given step-motherly treatment besides encouraging conversion of poverty stricken innocent Hindus on a large scale. Manmohan singh even went to the extent of declaring that muslims have the first right to every thing in the country. His this statement shocked the people at large.

Bullet Is it a crime to be Hindu in India?
By Bharat on 3/19/2009 5:51:26 PM

Varun has just asserted to be a Hindu - What is wrong in it? Is it a crime to be a Hindu and pro-Hindu in India? India's constitution is anti-Hindu and needs to be amended. Already, three large muslim nations (Afganistan, Pakistan and Bangla Desh) have been carved out of India. Still, muslims are infiltrating India and changing its demographics. The christians are also engaged in agressive conversions using the poverty tool. Will India of Hindus or Hindus exist ? It is time to think and act.

Bullet Why Varun is proud to stand up for Philibit Hindus
By Shankar on 3/19/2009 1:23:59 PM

In a prime time discussion with Rajdeep Sardesai on CNN-IBN on 17th March at 9 pm show veteran journalist and columnist Tarun Vijay said that Varun Gandhi hasn’t spoken against any community. Pilibhit is run under a complete Islamic dispensation with the District Magistrate, Additional D.M., Sub Divisional Magistrate- all Muslims posted there. Its represented by three MLAs and all of them are Muslims.

I am glad that Mr Varun had the courage to defend the Indian Nationalism and stand by what he had said that proves that he is true indian and a upright leader. Its not important what varun said but what important is the stand he has taken, I am glad that we have leaders like Varun and Narandra Modi . As for the media the more it spreads the Anti Varun campain the better that will only make Varun a hero among the indian youth.

Bullet Congress getting desperate
By Arjun on 3/19/2009 8:51:57 AM

All this shows increasing despair in Congress. They always stoop to petty tactics when things aren't going their way. The EC, of course, is a Congress faithful with a proven track record. I've seen Paki unpires who are more impartial.

Bullet Hindus are under siege
By KSV SUBRAMANIAN on 3/19/2009 8:31:24 AM

After the present took charge hindus have been pushed to the corner. Even the government declared that the First claim on all resources should go to muslims. Hindus are under siege.

Why the CD was not telecast and brought to the notice of EC and kept in the cold storage for over 10 days. It gives credibility to what Varun Gandhi is saying that the CD is doctored. Otherwise our visual and print media are waiting for anything against hindutva to cry hoarse like the recent pub incident

Bullet What did the EC do when color TVs were distributed in Tamilnadu elections and money in UP elections ?
By Dr.G.G.Rajan on 3/19/2009 7:05:10 AM

When there is no recognized code of conduct for the LS candidates, how can the EC recognize an audio CD in which anyone can imitate the voice of other person to defame him. This tactics has been in vogue for so many years.EC's observation will not hold in the court of Law. Even a video CD can be manipulated by voice dubbing. Let EC look for more authentic info.
