Mysterious death of pigs creates panic in Panna

Staff Reporter | Bhopal

The mysterious disease that led to the death of over two dozen pigs in Panna district has created panic among the residents. So many deaths of pigs in just three days have forced the district officials to investigate whether the cause of death was Swine Flu.

The administration though claimed that the reason behind the death of pigs was only Swine Fever, but they have dispatched the blood samples of the dead pigs to the state capital based laboratory and the report is awaited.

Till date as per official figures, around 30 pigs have died in the district. The organs and blood samples of pigs have been dispatched to DI Laboratory in State capital and the report is still awaited by the district authorities.

Brijpur and Ajaygarh areas of Panna district have witnessed more than two-dozen mysterious deaths of pigs in the last few days. These deaths have frightened the local residents and pig breeders. These deaths have incurred huge financial losses to the pig breeders.

According to sources, the mysterious contagious disease started among pigs in Ajaygarh and then spread to Brijpur. After initial deaths of pigs, the veterinary department had vaccinated the remaining pigs.

Despite these precautionary measures, few more pigs have died in the last couple of days.

The district administration has termed the diseased as swine fever, which is limited to pigs only. Panna district collector M Shailendra told The Pioneer, “The pigs have died after being affected by swine fever, which is very much different from the swine flu. The swine fever is contagious but only affects pigs and not the human beings.”

He also added that the vaccination has been done and the situation is completely under control. He claimed that around 10-15 pigs have died on both the affected places. The collector also informed that body organs and blood samples of deceased pigs have been dispatched to DI Laboratory Bhopal and the report might take one week, he said.
