In view of the harsh summer conditions, AIIMS Bhopal, under the guidance of Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, has issued important recommendations for preventive skincare to help people avoid common seasonal skin issues. Dr. Manish Khandare, Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology, explained that excessive heat, sweating, and prolonged sun exposure can trigger various skin problems, especially if proper skincare is neglected.
AIIMS Bhopal recommends wearing loose, breathable cotton clothing during summer, bathing after heavy sweating, avoiding heavy and oily cosmetics, drinking plenty of water, and refraining from sharing personal items such as towels. To maintain healthy skin, it is important to cleanse the face twice daily with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser, apply a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer, and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours when outdoors. Nighttime skincare should include cleansing and applying a hydrating moisturizer.
Common mistakes such as skipping sunscreen on cloudy days, frequent or harsh rubbing of the skin, and using heavy creams that clog pores can worsen skin conditions. Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh emphasized, “During the summer season, many neglect their skin, unaware that high temperatures and UV exposure can severely compromise skin health. AIIMS Bhopal stresses the importance of timely precautions and a consistent skincare routine. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a dermatologist promptly is crucial to prevent complications.”
The Dermatology Department also advises people to watch for symptoms such as redness, itching, peeling, rashes, and persistent dryness, which may indicate more serious skin conditions like heat rash, fungal infections, or allergic reactions. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent these conditions from worsening or becoming chronic.
For those working outdoors or engaging in physical activities under the sun, additional care is recommended. Wearing hats or umbrellas for shade, using sweat-resistant sunscreen, and staying hydrated with electrolyte-rich fluids can further protect the skin and overall health.
AIIMS Bhopal is also conducting awareness programs and distributing educational material on summer skincare in communities across the city.
