Congress sets below 45 years of age bar for district presidents

Monday, 09 June 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

From now on, district presidents in Madhya Pradesh will ideally be below the age of 45 years, as the Congress party embarks on a major organizational restructuring aimed at injecting fresh vigor and youth into its ranks. This strategic move is part of a broader campaign to strengthen the party's grassroots presence and enhance its electoral performance in the next polls.

The decision was formalized during a recent online meeting involving 165 observers, who were briefed on the comprehensive selection process for the crucial district president posts. The party's high command is committed to revitalizing its organizational structure, emphasizing youth leadership and ensuring a balanced representation across various social strata.

Under the new guidelines, candidates for district president positions are ideally expected to be between 35 and 45 years old. This age cap is a clear indication of the party's intent to promote a younger generation of leaders capable of connecting with contemporary voters and bringing dynamic energy to the organization.

Beyond age, the selection process will meticulously consider caste balance, aiming for adequate representation from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), minorities, and women. This focus on inclusivity is designed to ensure that the party's leadership reflects the diverse social fabric of Madhya Pradesh.

To ensure commitment and loyalty, prospective district presidents must have a minimum of five years of active and dedicated involvement in the party's activities. Furthermore, the Congress leadership has made it clear that leaders with past complaints of electoral irregularities or sabotage will be strictly excluded from consideration for these key organizational roles. This measure seeks to promote accountability and strengthen internal discipline within the party.

The appointed observers will play a critical role in this process, tasked with preparing confidential reports detailing the organizational strength at the district level, analyzing past election outcomes, and submitting a panel of suitable names for the district president position. These reports will be crucial in making informed decisions and selecting leaders who can effectively lead the party forward. This organizational revamp is expected to usher in a new era for the Madhya Pradesh Congress, with a renewed focus on youth, inclusivity, and robust grassroots machinery.

Regarding the state Congress' reorganization, a senior functionary of the party in Madhya Pradesh, said, “The first phase of state Congress' reorganisation will be complete in two months. The first phase of the state Congress reorgansiation would be election of new district presidents. The second and third phases would elect block presidents and booth in-charges."
