The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has issued fresh eviction notices to residents of the Bhoomiheen jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) camp in Kalkaji Extension, giving them a three-day ultimatum to vacate the area. The notice, issued on Sunday, warns that demolition will begin after Tuesday in compliance with court orders.
This marks the fourth round of eviction action at the site, following earlier demolition drives carried out in May and June this year and July 2023. The camp is home to a large number of migrant workers, many of whom have been living in the area for years.
According to the DDA, a total of 1,618 jhuggi structures were identified in the Bhoomiheen Camp. Of these, 935 structures have already been demolished, while the remaining 683 structures could not be cleared earlier due to legal stays, proximity to adjacent jhuggi and the presence of seven religious structures.
In a public notice pasted across the camp, the DDA stated, “All the residents of Bhoomiheen Camp in Kalkaji Extension are being informed that, as per court directions, illegal JJ clusters will be demolished. In this regard, three days — June 8, 9 and 10 - are being given. After this, the demolition drive will be carried out and DDA will not be responsible thereafter.”
Officials said the demolition follows the dismissal of related writ petitions by the HC. The DDA has cited the need to reclaim public land, make way for housing projects for other JJ clusters in the area, and curb further encroachment.
Based on eligibility criteria under the DUSIB policy, which considers dwellers with valid documentary proof of residence prior to January 1, 2015, only 1,862 households have been found eligible for relocation to Economically Weaker Section (EWS) flats.
There was no official comment from DDA on the latest notices.
