IGNCA inaugurates Exhibition and Workshop on Sohrai & Kohbar

Tuesday, 10 June 2025 | PNS | Ranchi

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), Conservation and Archives Division, and Regional Centre, Ranchi, in collaboration with Ranchi Women's College, inaugurated an Exhibition and Five-Day Workshop on Sohrai & Kohbar Painting today at Darshanam I, IGNCA, New Delhi.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Achal Pandya, Prof  & Head of the Conservation and Archives Division, IGNCA. The event marks a significant tribute to the 125th Death Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda — a revered tribal freedom fighter and cultural icon of India.

The week-long program, running from 9th to 13th June 2025, invites visitors to experience the vibrancy and symbolism of two of Jharkhand’s most treasured tribal art forms — Sohrai and Kohbar painting. Rooted in ritual and nature, Sohrai art is traditionally painted on walls during harvest and cattle festivals, reflecting agrarian life, animals, and mythic motifs. Kohbar painting, associated with marriage rituals, embodies fertility and prosperity, often characterized by intricate geometrical and floral designs.

A highlight of the workshop is the direct engagement with traditional artists from the village of Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, who have preserved and passed down these art forms through generations. Their presence provides an authentic, hands-on experience for participants, offering deep insight into both the technique and cultural significance behind each motif and brushstroke.

This initiative aims not only to celebrate India’s tribal heritage but also to foster cultural exchange and learning. Participants, including students, art enthusiasts, and scholars, will benefit immensely by engaging with living traditions, gaining a nuanced understanding of tribal aesthetics, and contributing to the preservation and dissemination of indigenous art.

The program celebrates the rich cultural legacy of Jharkhand and pays homage to the spirit of Bhagwan Birsa Munda through art that speaks of identity, tradition, and resilience.
