Free travel on the Indore Metro ended Sunday as fare collection officially began, marking a new phase in the city's public transport system.
Passenger numbers were low in the morning due to the weekend lull but picked up gradually through the afternoon. Metro staff noted continued public enthusiasm despite the introduction of ticket prices.
Indore Metro services were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31, drawing large crowds eager to experience the city’s first urban rail network. An automatic ticketing system is yet to be implemented, so fare data is being compiled manually. Officials said the full day's figures would be available after 10:30 PM. To ease the transition, a 75% discount is being offered on all Metro fares from June 8 to 15. A trip of two stations costs Rs 5, and up to five stations costs Rs 8.
A ride from Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Station to Veerangana Jhalkari Bai (TCS) Station costs Rs 8. A return journey requires buying a fresh ticket for the same amount.
Over 1.5 lakh passengers have used the Metro so far. From Sunday, penalties will be levied on those travelling without a valid ticket, officials warned.
