Law, Order, and Literature – The Story of a Policeman Turned Playwright

Former DIG Sanjay Ranjan Singh has lived a life of diverse experiences.

The man who once missed UPSC because he couldn’t face the interview, joined the Bihar police as a DSP and later became an IPS officer. His career even included a tenure as the producer of All India Radio. A poet, a playwright, and a politician – he is the jack of all trades.

An IPS officer from the 2009 batch, Sanjay Ranjan Singh was earlier posted as the commandant in the Indian Reserve Battalion, Chaibasa. After his tenure as the deputy Inspector General, the State Police Headquarters appointed him to the post of Deputy Director General at the Jharkhand Police Academy.

Dedicated to serving the country and its countrymen, he later stepped into politics. “It wasn’t a coincidence, rather destiny’s arrangement”, he says. Even after retirement, his motive to serve the nation is unmatched. He wishes to work more on the grassroots level and understand people’s everyday struggles more personally.

At the start of his political career, he joined the AJSU party in Jharkhand as the general secretary cum spokesperson. Marking a political shift in January 2025, he joined hands with Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD). This alliance has increased the party’s momentum in Jharkhand.

Deeply influenced by Lalu Yadav’s morals and aspirations, Singh strives to spread the party’s message to people all over the region.

In February 2025, a felicitation ceremony was held in his honour at the Dakbangla premises of the Kurtha Block headquarters, organised by the locals. Overwhelmed by the locals’ respect and honour, he recalled the time he worked in the Kurtha—Biharsharif region. The fact that people remembered him after so many years is a testament to his great service.

Besides being a politician, he is a poet, a playwright, and a scriptwriter. A few years ago, he went to watch Girish Karnad’s play ‘Haywadan’. He found something missing and decided to work on his own play one day. That thought gave birth to ‘Three sisters and a Dream’.

A story based on three sisters was entirely shot in Jharkhand and was released on multiple OTT platforms. It follows the life journey of Radha Sinha and her three daughters: Divya, Bhavya, and Navya. Set against the backdrop of struggles and pain, it paints an emotional picture of Radha. Rabia, another character, also struck the chords of the audience’s hearts with her quiet strength. The film navigates through the different hardships women face in their lives.

‘Three Sisters and a Dream’ also marks his directorial debut. An IPS-turned-filmmaker, Sanjay Ranjan Singh, said that his only purpose in making this film was to highlight the “curse” of female foeticide in Indian society. With his multiple endeavours, he shows his deep commitment not just to uphold the law but to challenge societal evils with the power of storytelling.
