State BJP raises objections to rechristening of DSPMU

Saturday, 10 May 2025 | PNS | Ranchi

BJP and the ruling JMM-Congress coalition have come face to face over the Jharkhand government's decision to change the name of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University. BJP has called this decision of the Hemant cabinet the beginning of a wrong tradition. At the same time, JMM and Congress are calling it an honor for Jharkhand's brave son and great freedom fighter Budhu Bhagat.

In fact, in the year 2017, during the reign of Raghubar Das, the government established Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University. Ranchi College, which runs under Ranchi University, was made a university in the name of Jan Sangh founder and freedom fighter Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Now in the cabinet meeting held on Thursday, May 08 under the leadership of Hemant Soren, it has been decided to change the name of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University to Shaheed Veer Budhu Bhagat University, the great hero of the Tribal Rebellion.

The ruling party and the main opposition party BJP have come face to face over this decision of the Hemant cabinet. Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Assembly Babulal Marandi has called it the beginning of a wrong tradition, while JMM-Congress leaders are calling it an honour for the great freedom fighter Veer Budhu Bhagat, a son of the state's soil, and the tribal society.

BJP State President and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi has called the cabinet's decision unfortunate and the beginning of a wrong tradition. He said on the decision of the Hemant Cabinet that it is neither in honour of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee nor does it give due respect to the contribution of the great freedom fighter Veer Budhu Bhagat.

BJP State Spokesperson Pradeep Sinha, taking forward the statement of his State President, said that the narrow thinking of JMM and Hemant Government about Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, who sacrificed his life to make the country united and all-pervasive as well as to protect Kashmir, is unfortunate.

Pradeep Sinha said that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was born in Bengal and Bihar and Jharkhand were part of Bengal. Such actions for vote bank politics and that too when the Indian Army is responding to terrorism from Pakistan through Operation Sindoor, shows the petty thinking of the government and JMM-Congress. He said that the contribution of martyr Veer Budhu Bhagat is also noteworthy for the country, the government can create a separate university in his name, but changing the name of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University is not right.

Welcoming the decision of the Hemant Cabinet, JMM central spokesperson Manoj Pandey said that our government has been formed not to please the BJP leaders but to bring smile on the faces of the people of the state. He said that even before the First War of Independence of 1857, there was a Kol rebellion against the British, the hero of that rebellion was martyr Veer Budhu Bhagat. The British had put a reward of ₹ 100 on his arrest at that time. Today when our government is giving respect to that son of the soil, then why is the BJP and its leader Babulal Marandi having a stomach ache? Manoj Pandey said that Shyama Prasad Mukherjee has no contribution for the state.

While reacting to Babulal Marandi's allegation, JMM leader Manoj Pandey said that what is the meaning of changing the name of Sardar Patel and building a stadium in the name of PM Modi in Ahmedabad, Gujarat?

At the same time, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperation Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Hemant Soren on the decision of the Hemant Cabinet. Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey said that during the winter session of the year 2024, she had placed this demand before the government in the Zero Hour in the House. This decision of the cabinet is a tribute to Veer Budhu Bhagat, the hero of the Kol rebellion. He said that Veer Budhu Bhagat is a hero of tribal bravery and struggle and our government has honored him.
