Nightmare presidency

The Pioneer Edit Desk

Obama is ruining India’s security climate

He may not relish the comparison but it is now becoming increasingly obvious that Mr Barack Obama is the most hostile American President for India since Richard Nixon. In the eight months he has been in office, Mr Obama has snubbed India more than once. He has sent repeated signals that New Delhi is not integral to his Asian security architecture. Partly as a result of his country’s economic crisis, he has bent over backwards to accommodate China. His open advocacy of protectionism has been most visibly targeted at outsourcing of technology jobs to India. He headlined anti-trade legislation by saying it would punish those who created jobs in Bangalore rather than Buffalo, a special mention that was extraordinarily impolitic and did not go unnoticed in India. In contrast, the tariff war against Chinese tyres has not been posited in such stark bilateral terms. This past week, the Obama team reversed a decade of American nuclear pragmatism and went back to an outdated non-proliferation agenda that should have died, really, in the 1990s. Once more, India has been asked to give up its nuclear weapons and sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a second-tier power. Most alarmingly, Mr Obama has swung wildly on Afghanistan-Pakistan (AfPak). At various points his diplomats and Generals have said different things. Yet, in all this the overarching political message has been missing.

There has been a remarkable absence of clarity on Mr Obama’s strategic goals. In the early months, it was easy to pretend he was making up his mind. Now, it would seem he has no mind. His confusion on AfPak and constant shifting of tactical milestones would suggest he has little understanding of the nature of the challenge there and, behind those engaging phrases, is thoroughly confused. If the Obama Administration’s most recent thoughts on AfPak are taken as final, the American President is looking to cut and run. He would want to begin bringing troops home by early 2012, in time for his re-election. This would mean delegating Afghanistan to the Pakistani Army, and asking it to control the Taliban. It would also activate a lethal Saudi-Pakistani-Taliban alliance. This formidable combination of wealth, geography, religious appeal, unending foot-soldiers and nuclear weapons would create a monster power straddling south and west Asia. To some degree, it could be offset by a strong India and a stable Iran, which would flank AfPak. However, Mr Obama is determined that Teheran must not pursue its Bomb and India should be pressured to sign the NPT. Strangely, he has not considered asking Pakistan to give up its nukes in return for billions of dollars of “sustained and expanded commitment”.

Given the intensely and admirably egalitarian nature of the United States presidential election process, it has always been a theoretical possibility that the country will send to the White House a person inexperienced in global affairs and unequal to the international situation before him. Often this has not been the case, and incumbents have risen to the job. Sixty years ago, Harry S Truman had limited first-hand knowledge of great power bargaining but turned out to be farsighted enough to anticipate the Cold War. Mr Obama is the antithesis of this phenomenon. He is completely out of his depth and will probably leave behind a dangerous and unsure legacy. India could have done without this neophyte.

Bullet Obama hasn't even been a mayor of a small town
By Oh Bummer on 10/5/2009 8:23:31 PM

If I recall correctly, the Obama team mocked Palin because she was once the mayor of a small town. But O has never managed ANYTHING, he's just been good at getting elected. He has no experience running a village, a city or a state, so he's clueless when running the most powerful state in the world. I'm sorry for the Indians that are getting the brunt of this bimbo's biased banter, but I'm more sorry for Americans who have this guy for the next 4 years

Bullet WATCHDOG OF AMERICAN INTERESTS ONLY
By Sanjog Maheshwari on 10/4/2009 8:58:39 PM

I am an intense Obama supporter. Why should he act friendly with India, if American interests are in conflict with those of ours? Obama's first concern is to protect promote and safeguard the interests of U.S.A and American people and as a watchdog of those interests , he is doing what any other true-to-his position American occupant of the White House would be doing. Who will respect the nation that is bereft of any respect for itself. He is the President of USA and not that of India.

Bullet there is more to it
By Agrasar on 10/1/2009 3:55:35 PM

I knew a few folks who were both Jehovah's witnesses as well as University students supporting the democratic party along with some Latin American folks who had rediscovered their Chrisitian faith. At the time I was told that the US would have a black president and that the US would try and focus more on Africa for some reason and India being non-Chrisitian was essentially irrelevant. I thought it was a joke. Now I am not laughing. Under democrats India is in trouble.

Barry is a Marxist pure and simple. So he snubs Britan, India, and Israel. BTW....Barry isn't very well liked here in Texas either.

Bullet Who wrote this article?

Dear Editor, You may well have a point, but it would be nice to know who wrote this editorial? It came as quite a surprise to me as an Obama supporter...

Bullet Obama, India, and the US
By HarryO on 9/29/2009 6:37:24 AM

This is a very good piece, and I cannot argue with the logic of it. But, consider this...the people of the United States know that India is our friend. We have some economic issues, true...but we have a much more pressing issue (as do you) with Islamic Extremists, and Pakistan is a bigger fire right now. And that's what being the US President is all about...putting out fires. The Chinese own much of our debt, how should he treat them? Same with the Saudis. It's easy to blame Obama for everything..

Bullet Don't take it personally, Obama seems to hate Americans
By Lila Cardiff on 9/29/2009 5:09:34 AM

God bless you wonderful people. I love the decency and intelligence of the Indian people. We Americans so admire and appreciate Indians residents and immigrants. Obama is our nightmare, he seems to want to lower the global population with dangerous vaccinations, food and water policies that will create shortages, and likes dictators. He IS our nightmare as much as his is yours. The press loves him and the people don't know the truth about him. God help us. He is encouraging war.

Bullet Yes, Out of His Depth
By Mart Martin on 9/29/2009 2:49:34 AM

Yes, your editorial is correct. Obama is completely out of his depth in the presidency. He does make great speeches - good language, I mean, as there's little or no substance to any of the words (or intent.) As long as he's making speeches, that's less time for him to devote to making a bigger mess of an already bad situation. And that's about all we have to be thankful for at this point. I do have no doubt that eventually he'll make some truly gigantic mistakes for which the US will be paying.

Bullet 0bama the liar in chief
By Mike on 9/29/2009 2:35:22 AM

0bama is what we call an Empty Suit. He is a communist throughout with a spine of jello. When the going gets tough, 0bama will get gone! He is a worthless man without a soul. The fact he is half black is the ONLY reason he was elected. It's called "liberal white guilt". America will suffer as will the rest of the world until this CLOWN is gone!

Bullet Obama is a Marxist and Anti-American
By Margaret on 9/29/2009 2:23:24 AM

If you think India is afraid of Obama, you should live in the U.S.! I went to the Washington DC Tea Party Rally on Sept. 12 -- a long and costly two-day trip just to demonstrate my horror at his tactics and goals. There were close to 2 million people crowding the Capitol and Mall and streets as far as the eye could see -- all with homemade signs against him and the Democrats' goals. The middle class has never before risen up like this. Our freedoms and llife's savings are on the line.

Bullet USA Still a great place - despite our CIC

Bullet Obama is no friend of any democracy
By jukin on 9/29/2009 1:31:04 AM

I'm afraid that the entire world will pay a steep price for a manipulative USA media and illegal campaign financing.Sadly, on every occasion to choose freedom and democracy Obama has chosen totalitarianism and oppression. While Bush ran up large deficits and expanded our government, Obama has tripled Bush's deficits and the man is a hard core communist. It is a sad day when a veteran, small business man, and patriot is more proud of the french president than of his own. Good

This man is the most ill-prepared and unaccomplished president the United States has ever had. Let us hope that he will not be our downfall although he is doing a fine job of trying to destroy us as quickly as he can. Thank you for the article.

Bullet Press at work - do not disturb
By 26Charlie on 9/28/2009 11:18:45 PM

Don't know how it is in India, but the mainstream press in US has an agenda. They never reported anything true about this fraud and inadequate President; look how they reported the Taxpayer March on Washington as "tens of thousands". In actuality it was closer to two millions - a University put their people-counter program on the crowd pictures and came up with 1.7 million. When it comes to Obama news from the press, remember that the truth is not in them.

Bullet The Poser
By Simon Templar on 9/28/2009 11:15:07 PM

I was pleased and shocked to read your article. It is very insightful and on target. Perhaps you could help me understand why so many of your fellow Indians here in America supported his Presidency, hated Bush, think Americans are stupid, and are left leaning. Odd thing too when you consider how many of them want to be US citizens but do not respect our conservative values or understand our unique history relative to what has made our nation great. I truly would like your opinion on this..

Bullet Obama is the American Left
By Sara on 9/28/2009 10:25:37 PM

Obama reflects the vapid state of America's "liberal" elite. In all our institutions they lord over us like the Emperor with no clothes lordered over his peasants. They stand at the doorway of most advanced educational opportunity and to get in, you must parrot Obama type world views. It is really getting old. They have been doing this for over fifty years now and they are taking the average IQ of the Nation's elite into the toilet with them.

Bullet Obama Incompetent
By USVeteran on 9/28/2009 9:57:45 PM

Yeah, he is also a nightmare for many of us in the USA. Our leftist media created him from an unqualified Chicago Democrat party machiine hack, and 52% of the voters fell for it. Best description of Obama I have seen: "He isn't a real President, but he plays one on TV". He really seems to like dictators, doesn't he?

Bullet Obama's lack of coherence
By Larry Hughes, Michigan USA on 9/28/2009 9:39:21 PM

I think there is equal consternation in Soeul, Tokyo, London, Paris, Roma, Berlini, etc., etc. NATO is probably dead as a consequence of cut and run from Afghanistan, and all the European and friendly Asian countries will suddenly need to throw up their own military defense forces. Politicians in the West have for decades talked unilateral disarmament in public, while thanking the U.S. for its military shield in private. This marks the beginning of a new era.

Bullet "nightmare pResident"

On behalf of all Americans, I wish to apologize to the entire world for this moronic pretender. Many of us tried to stop this travesty, but could not be heard over the slobbering of the major media, and could not pierce the ignorance of government-schooled voters who only wanted to know how the government could care for them.

Bullet Obama Hostile to India
By Garet on 9/28/2009 8:50:29 PM

This man is the worst thing to happen to my country since Jimmy Carter, Richard Nxion, and Millard Filmore combined. Please. To our friends in India: We just have to wait this monster out. In a bit more than three years we shall hopefully be rid of him. Until then all we can do is pray that disaster does not descend upon all the free peoples of the world.By the way, I do not think he is an idiot . I think he is evil.

America has had to deal with it's racial sins for generations and unfortunately, the world will have to deal with this. Those who questioned Obama's lack of experience and even idealogue were labeled racist from the start and it has gotten worse since the election. By shutting down any criticism of the blunders of this President and labeling it "racist", you also shut down some good common sense ideas. Please know that the majority of America stands with India .

Bullet Suicide
By james on 9/28/2009 7:30:20 PM

Don't despair, our Indian friends. Pray that Obama's plan to nationalize health care fails because if it does then we will be able to muddle through to next year when we will take his congress away from him. If he succeeds with health care, you are on your own because America will be lost to the world forever. Obama is an existential threat to the US and therefore to everyone else.

Bullet Lots of company
By ddh on 9/28/2009 6:41:37 PM

"India could have done without this neophyte." So, too, could other countries with longer histories of partnership with the United States--Britain, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Georgia, Israel, South Korea, Japan, and Honduras--and the list will grow before Obama is done. His willingness to appease dictators and aspiring dictators in Russia, Iran, China, North Korea, Burma, Venezuela, and Cuba will come to no good end.

Bullet Mr. Obama
By John on 9/28/2009 6:39:32 PM

I have tried to believe that Mr. Obama would get used to the office in time and begin acting as a leader, I was badly mistaken. Mr. Obama has shown no leadership ability since taking office, nor do I think he can, his continuous foolish errors and stupidity has been a embarrasment to most Americans. He lacks the basic understanding of democracy and the representative form of government, he responds like a spoioled child denied his afternoon snack.

Bullet Another Point of View

Well, it appears that I found the Rush Limbaugh/Glenn Beck of India - and it is hides behind the "Editorial Desk" of The Pioneer amateur newspaper. I seriously doubt that my comment will make it into internet print, but here goes. While the vocal minority seems to get most of the press in the USA, there was and remains a significant majority that believed in Barack Obama's view of the World and how things should be.

There are many Americans who are also appalled by the sheer stupidity of this president. Witness the thousands of protests thruout our nation. Hopefully our nation can survive his feckless leadership.

Health Care is a flop....and I fully believe it was a shell game from the beginning..he care not for one sick or poor person in our country. He is being told what to do by his minions of CZARS.....and his Nazi Cabinet. They are using him and he is too stupid and dense to understand what is going on.

Have the scales fallen from your eyes? Yes Obama, the narcissist-in-chief, the ONE, has feet of clay. The world fell for his "freshness", but many of us here in the US knew a Chicago thug and marxist when we saw it. Just hope November of 2010 comes soon, so we can change the look of congress, and block his grandiose plans to ruin all economies that are doing well--to "even out the playing field."

Bullet No picnic for US either

He has all but torn up the constitution, abrogating contracts and seizing property from groups and handing it to another politically favored group. He fired the head of a private company, GM. He took Chrysler stock from bondholders and gave it to the auto unions. We have a saying here for Obama. "The clothes have no emperor", but we just say that in the hope that he is really that naive, and not actually hostile to our country.
