Forces kill top HuJI militants in Kishtwar

PNS | Jammu

In a joint operation, security forces gunned down three militants in Kishtwar district on Thursday, including top commander of the Harkat-ul Jehad Islami (HuJI). The ultras had ambushed two Army jawans in Kishtwar on January 28, before fleeing from the area.

One soldier, Ravi Kant of 11 Rashtriya Rifles, sacrificed his life in the fierce gunfight while one of the women accomplices of the slain ultras was arrested from their hideout at the end of the day-long encounter.

According to the police spokesman, the slain terrorists have been identified as Pakistan-trained HuJI supreme commander Feroz Ahmed Mengnu, code Dawood (son of Haji Mohd Ramzan) and residing in Tander Dachhan and his two deputy commanders — Nazir Ahmed, code Abu Furqan, (son of Sher Mohd) from Chichha and Mohd Ishaq (son of Mohd Ramzan) and residing in Tander Dachhan.

During the operation, security forces also managed to nab Babli, daughter of Bashir Mengnu of Tander Dachhan, who is reportedly Mengnu’s wife. Babli is suspected to have been working in close coordination with militants in the district for three to four years.

The police spokesman said 11 and 26 Rashtriya Rifles of the Indian Army and Kishtwar Police had launched a search operation in a dense forest area of Khankhu Dhar Ridge near Bela Chichha, after developing information.

After the area was cordoned off, initial contact was established with the HuJI terrorists but soon a fierce gunbattle broke out. Arms recovered from the encounter site include two AK rifles, one SLR with magazines and a huge quantity of ammunition.

HuJI militants were instrumental in fresh recruitment to rejuvenate their outfit in Kishtwar district, according to the police.
