The university organised lectures of oncologists Dr Sapna Nangia, Chairman, Radiotherapy, Fortis Hospital on oral cancer. Dr Harit Chaturvedi, Chairman, Surgery, Max Hospital spoke about management of cancer and Dr Manoj Sharma, Professor, MAMC deliberated on strategies for prevention and control of cancer.
Prof M Aslam, Vice Chancellor, IGNOU, addressed the gathering on the ill-effects of various types of addictions which boost the risk of cancer. He added that the lower middle class is unable to afford the expenses incurred for medication. However, early detection and prevention of cancer is necessary.
Dr Chaturvedi stressed upon the lack of awareness for cancer. He said that cancer cells are immortal. The reasons might be genetic, environmental but the vaccination is available.
The most common forms of cancer prevalent among men and women are lung and breast cancer respectively . Oral cancer develops due to smoking and chewing of tobacco. Two in every five cases of cancer among men occur due to use of tobacco in various forms. Other types of cancer like thyroid, ovary, uterus, brain, prostate and bladder are also on the rise.
Dr Nangia stated that six out of ten people in Delhi are suffering from lung cancer. The disease started in 1950s with the usage of tobacco in the country.
Prof TK Jena, Director, SOHS, IGNOU brought forward the issues related to cancer which need to be brought in the limelight.
According to him, excessive usage of mobile phones aggravates the effect. Reeta Devi, Assistant Professor, SOHS, IGNOU, delivered the vote of thanks.
