20K kg of plastic bags seized; challans issued
More than 20,000 kilograms of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns) have been seized by various agencies across Delhi as part of the ongoing operations to effectively implement the plastic ban in the national Capital.
“As per the reports submitted by various departments, a total of 20,008 kg of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns) have been seized, 1,108 challans have been issued and a total of Rs 17,30,000 amount has been realised as environment compensation,” said a Government official.
This information was provided in a meeting convened by Environment Minister Imran Hussain on Tuesday, with senior officers from Environment Department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee to review the progress on various environmental issues including implementation of the ban on less than 50 microns plastic carry bags, anti fire-crackers campaign and Air Pollution.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed for complete ban on use of Plastic Carry bags made of plastic less than 50 microns and non-compostable in entire Delhi. It also directed that anyone found possessing or using plastic bags would be liable to pay compensation of Rs 5,000/- per default.
Delhi Pollution Control Committee has constituted different teams to ensure the compliance of the directions regarding prohibition on the use of above kind of plastic carry bags in Delhi.
“Public notices were issued by the Department of Environment in newspapers thereby asking the general public, vendors, shop-keepers, whole sellers to abide by the aforesaid directions of this Tribunal…Directions of NGT are being implemented by all concerned departments and plastic carry bags are being seized and challans are being issued,” read a statement.
The Minister directed the officers for strictly implementing the directions of NGT with respect to sale, storage and use of less than 50 micron plastic carry bags at the shops, markets and other establishments and send regular action taken report.
He directed that concerted and coordinated efforts are required to be taken on regular basis by the various agencies charged with this responsibility viz. Municipal Corporations/Local bodies, Revenue Department, Delhi Cantonment Board and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).
The Minister also reviewed the status of strengthening of Ambient Air Monitoring Network.
It was informed by senior officer of DPCC that the work of installation of 20 Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations is in advance stage of installation and these stations will likely to be completed by October 2017 and data will be available in public domain online on real time basis.
