“Today we live in a nuclear family, but it is my strong belief that family values can be instilled only by the elderly people of the family. There is a lot of fire within retired people and thus we should utilise their experiences and expertise,” Dr Mitra said at a seminar, Jagriti, for senior citizens organised by the Naraina Vihar Social Welfare Society (NVSWS) .
Mitra said, “Senior citizens should not be treated as old and weak human beings. They are the ones who have come across through all vicissitudes of life. They are experienced and full of knowledge. Thus, they should be treated as masters and guides. They are the ones who teach us the importance of values in our lives. They should thus be revered and worshipped. As they have grown old with time, it becomes our responsibility to take care of them and help them.”
On the occasion, Additonal DCP South West Parmaditya imparted a few tips to the elderly about how they can keep themselves safe. Parmaditya suggested that senior citizens staying alone must get such people like servants, washermen, and the grocery man verified and they must get installed magic eye on their doors. “They should also have neighbour bell in their houses so that if they are in any trouble and if there is any emergency, they can easily inform their neighbours by just pressing the door bell. Senior citizens should get themselves registered in their nearest police station so that the police can easily help them and provide assistance and facilities to them,” Parmaditya added.
Sampurna NGO founder Shobha Vijender said, “There should be creation of a National Commission for Senior Citizens, on the lines of the National Commission for Women, National Commission for Minorities.” Others present on the occasion were Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta, president of Naraina Vihar Social Welfare Society Sanjeev Arora and other social activists.
