This is the first time that the mammoth head count is being carried out to identify the poor along with their caste and religion. While the last BPL census was carried out in 2002, this is the first effort to carry out caste census since 1931.
Under the exercise, all relevant households which have been enumerated would be revisited, with the enumerators, mostly from the State Governments, going door to door. The information on caste and religion at the individual level would remain confidential and the overall figures would be published separately.
Reacting on the caste and religion based census, former Delhi BJP president Dr Harshvardhan said, ‘The question is that do we need caste based census in this 21st century? Will this benefit the people or help the politicians in getting more political leverage? Or it will simply increase the split in civilisation?
This is really unfortunate ahead of the elections in five States, common man has to accept the Government’s decision, may be they are not in favour of it and tax payers have to pay their hard earned money without any interest in Government’s new formed policies. Is this for welfare of people or is just a new way of corruption,” Vardhan questioned.
According to officials, the enumerators will collect information in 32 columns of which the tablet PC will have pre-loaded information collected in national population form such as name of the head of the family, relation with other members of family, gender and date of birth.
The enumerators need to just check the pre-loaded details. The enumerator will collect individual information, highest educational qualification, source of income, long-term illness, religion, caste and sub-caste status, details of residence, assets like refrigerator, mobile, computer and laptop, vehicles etc.
