Why liberals love to hate Modi

Author:  Swapan Dasgupta

It is extremely unlikely that the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team’s ‘closure report’ to the Ahmedabad Magistrate’s Court on the plea to prosecute Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the 2002 riots will be the last word on the subject.

If the past is any indication, the determined band of ambulance-chasers that has lived off the misery of the unfortunate Muslim victims of the post-Godhra violence will avail of every legal trick in the book to keep the issue alive. The chances of the activists having their way and getting a FIR registered against Modi may be very slim. However, that is not going to stop them from keeping the issue alive in court on one plea or another.

The important thing to remember is that no court, including the Supreme Court, has, after a decade of relentless litigation, found anything to implicate Modi personally in the killings. Yes, there have been strictures, such as the latest one by the Gujarat High Court, against the administration for its sins of omission. In a way that is right because the mere fact that widespread riots did happen in the aftermath of the arson attack on Sabarmati Express constitutes an indictment of the State Government. However, there is a big difference between a State’s failure to protect the lives and property of citizens and the suggestion that the administration — from the Chief Minister and police chief down to the local thanedar — was guilty of a criminal conspiracy to teach Muslims a lesson.

The difference matters. For the Government’s overall failure to stop the killing of citizens can fetch two reactions. First, people can pressure the administration to ensure that all the perpetrators of violence are identified and prosecuted. This has happened in the Best Bakery case and a few other cases. Second, citizens and political parties have the right to take any failure of the administration to the arena of competitive politics. This too has happened. The riots dominated the agenda of the 2002 State Assembly election and were an undercurrent in the 2007 poll. On both occasions, Modi got a resounding endorsement from the highest court of democracy.

Indeed, it was the realisation that the Congress lacked the leadership and ability to outplay Modi in the electoral arena that triggered the attempt to defeat him through the courts. It is quite clear that the activists who have dogged Modi’s footsteps aren’t terribly interested in punishing members of the mob that attacked Gulberg Housing Society, killing Ehsan Jaffri. That aspect of the case appears to have been conveniently forgotten. They want to somehow establish that Jaffri’s killing was the consequence of an order given by the Chief Minister. To achieve this end they have used every trick in the book, including getting a police officer to depose an imaginary account of a meeting — what the SIT report has diplomatically dubbed an “afterthought.” They have even undertaken a campaign of vilification against SIT members, calling into question their impartiality.

The activists’ initiatives may not have achieved the end goal but there is little doubt that they have had an effect. For a start, the preoccupation with Modi’s personal culpability has influenced the powerful liberal establishment, both in India and overseas, and cast the Chief Minister as an ogre. This in turn has diverted attention from the fact that there has been no recurrence of communal rioting in Gujarat since 2002. The past decade in Gujarat has been one of peace and very rapid economic development. In the sphere of governance, Modi’s achievements have been colossal.

The people of Gujarat have long forgotten the riots — and don’t want to be reminded of them, something even the local Congress understands — but thanks to the activists the State has been portrayed as a laboratory of intolerance and regressive thought. As an astute politician, Modi has managed to use this needless vilification to drum up regional pride. Yet, thanks to the demonology that has been constructed, neither Modi nor Gujarat has got the necessary credit for a decade of exemplary growth.

Will this change after Modi has crossed yet another hurdle? The answer depends not merely on how Gujarat votes at the end of 2012. The real reason why Modi is being targeted isn’t because he is a regional boss of a national party. His detractors are reconciled to him playing a long innings in the State. Their fear — and I guess this is a fear shared by some BJP leaders as well — is that Modi is now for all practical purposes a national leader. If the legal assault on Modi loses momentum, nothing will stand in the way of Modi shifting his gaze to national politics where he is certain to be an inspirational figure, capable of mobilising a substantial section of the electorate exasperated by the dullness and cynicism of existing leaders.

I have little or no doubt in my mind that Modi’s popularity will exceed the present level of support for the BJP. He will galvanise a large section of those who have hitherto stayed out of politics and who regard electoral democracy as a cesspool. Modi will be the most formidable opposition to the UPA nationally. A Gandhi-Modi contest in 2014 will be absolutely riveting. Modi has raw energy behind him. What he now needs is strategy and tactics.

Again Swapan Dasgupta believes the lies that what happened was a 'genocide' of Muslims or one-sided riots. The fact that hundreds of Hindus were also killed even after Godhra and 40,000 Hindus were thrown out of their homes by Muslims even after Godhra is ignored completely here. The role of Narendra Modi can be seen here www.gujaratriots.com

probes , commissions etc can becontinued till the report is what some people want. the sinle minded pursuit of modi's destruction and incidentally b.j.p has the most pwerful support in india... destruction of a people in a comprehensive manner will continue. lost causes fall foul of law ,as victor hugo wrote. certainly the drama will be drawn out may be a few decades. the outcome is already written. as to the victims who were burnt , or the ethnic cleansing in kashmir why is there a hulla balloosince there is nothing new in all this. kurup

One question which come to my mind is who started Godhra ? Also, lour honorable UPA tried to prove it was accident from inside.. while report clearly state it was fire from outside.. Did any one tried to find out and made cry that these people also need justice.. All these activist are either congress or communist. Also, one thing the fire was most probably started by some party (not in power) and also the riots were started by them (not in power, initialy).... AS ruling party never want disturbance.. because they have chance of lossing the election next time.. But once riots happen.. they had two choices either to stop immediately and loose the power because govt. will get dissolve and they can't come in power because no one will vote for them... Or to let it happen and take a chance... This is risky but you have chance of atleast some supporters..... . So, they might have taken the risks.. and it worked in their favor.. This is politics. everyone do so.. When so many soldiers are died it is politics... This is what CPM do with farmers.. make them maoist.. use them to capture power and once you get kill them in encounter.. this is what US did with OSama.. this is what BSP did with dalits.. this is what tamil tiger did...
I also have one question where were these activist when Hindus were killed in Kashmir.. I didn't see any case against the CM at that time ??? Why this double politics... In india.. life should be life.. not based on caste.... If hindu died and we ask for justice (Godhra).. he is fundametalist.. and if other died and we ask for justice we are tagged secular... This is wrong... They should have said in Gujarat, people were killed from both sides and this is very unfortunate and we should prevent this from happening in future.. No one give this statement. Not even our secular FXXKING CPM..... (sucks at every point.)...... I can point many instances, Gujarat is nothing....... infront of what happen in Kashmir.. is someone ready to Jtell why from 15% the population of Kashmiri hindu currently it is now 0.1%. (It is INDIA, right.. who are maximum terrorits).. I can bet even not this much muslims were killed in Gujarat... Did any one did anything for these hindus ?????????? OPEN QUESTION.... DId our activist tried to help them... ????????

To all those who hate or like Naredra Modi. I am amazed at voluminous public opinions on what has happened at Gujrath in 2002 , some people believe
there was a conspiracy and some believe its a politcal strategy to blame Modi. Well its state apparatus and Modi himself were the persons who knew
what was happening. Situations during communal riots is unpredictable atleast untill it is established there is a problem call in Military and
impose a curfew. Victims may not be expected to know full information weather there is premeditated attack against them or its instantaneous attack
aganst them. So next order comes to CBI and probing agencies who will investigate the matters and submit reports to Judiciary and this has happened
and in the course there is differences of opinion between two authorities amiecus Curie Ramachandran and SIT, but it was SIT was more responsible
to probe the entire matter. The Activist who are fighting modi differ from SIT opinion and its up to Judiciary to decide if they feel the whole
investigation was fair. Looking at interview aired on different channels high emotions can seen on the faces of activist who forcefully argue
investigation is not in right order and when you look at Modi's interview he makes his argument with no expression (rather tries to ) in his face
"Did court say i am guilty".
Definately i am surprised how much energy Modi has to take on this, One might say blame game is a common phenomenon in politicsbut here it is definatly more than that he is personally held responsible for all the killings of Godra (specifically Muslim Community), But to him this has become and act of past and he is only trying to focus on future. He has been elected twice by Gujrathi people and he has taken on responsibility and was ratedbest cheif minister. He has shown to rest of India what you can do if you are able administrator. Opposition has had no opportunity they were thinking they were criticizing Modi but were unintentionally showering praise on him.So we have to think what ammunition has opposition has to take on Modi politicall well its only past "GODRA RIOTS". So 2007 legal complaints were filed and whole episode of godra was raked up again , cuts were made in healing wounds and salt sprinkled so that people start to believe Modi was a culprit. Activist were provided necessary Monetory and political support to project them as nuetral party as if they are working hard for real justice, magazines like Thehelka carried fictious stories of Godra similar to bolly wood movie climax; Selected discontent state officers were worked out for anti Modi operation. But to Modi this did not mean anything he has considerably won a second time and he hasprogressed along with Gujrath in his second tenure and people have started to think of him as national leader and his ratings have definately gone up. The whole communal issue is not with Modi but people who hate him because they are seeing the glass half empty rather than half full. Gujrath as a state hasprogressed its not individual communities, the fruits of devolepment belong to Gujrathi people and there were no cases where it was denied to particular community.Different schemes of Governament were avalable to all communities. The sucess of modi is further frustating the opposition and they are looking at creating more fictional stories and train more people to provide false evidences.

If there was something wrong at Godra and all the state appartus is keeping mum it would be hard to believe then we can safely say Gujrath is anti Minority state but we have not seen behavior in past or after 2002.Post Independence there were several places where there were communal riots and always seen as sensitive areas like Old city of Hyderbad, and communities flared up in 1984 Sikh riots but if one observes opposition parties of india have not learned so much of "Divide and Rule" as the congress has done so in the interst of the country the wounds were allowed to heal and normalcy restored.Activist in a way are causing more harm by not letting wounds heal in a way they are responsible for all the bomb blasts that happen as revenge to Godra, Because they do not want to believe any agency probing and beng on saying Justice cannot be achieved in this country. Why are these people not fighting to give punishment to those Central Agencies who tried to paint "Godra was an accident" . what was the intention of doing that ?
Modi means lot to India the first Non Gandi 5 year PM Narashima Rao and his finance minister laid foundations for a prosherous India, also let the opposition parties to take roots. till end of 1990 there was no opposition for Congress party which means democracy has no strong foundations.Currently Modi is one of the able administrators whom India needs weather to carry on reforms of bring in innovation and good Governance and bring some sold experience and fresh ideas to Governance rather than one more term of rotten inherited dynasty rule of Gandhi and all scams associated with it.

Does India not want uninterupted 24 Hour electricty, Good Governance , Security and strong infrastructure, Congress party having ruled UP for nearly
50 years never was able to achieve this and begging for one more term. Modi should be hanged if legal system finds him unconstitutional but till then
he needs to continue his sucess in Gujrath and bring that to all of India

there were people from all communities who were died then why to waste time to criticise some one who is doing the best to develop his state as well as helping to grow India .
Indians wants now just development for them as wll as for their future generation.
All communities should not just go behind some one who are just doing politics for power.
See the realistic angle and side where all can live the better life and improve standared of living as we see from most of the reports nationaly and internationaly for gujarat.

poor losers, who oppose modi and will not reconcile with the fact that he has been cleared. again dragging the whole comparision of him and hitler is very shallow. he went by the book. and in such incidents there are bound to be people who think that enough was not done. now with the sc saying the same its clear. so wake up and accept the fact. actually im suprised with the verdict as there is so much hatered for modi and to objective very clear that 2014 GE have to be a one way contest with the gandhi sion winning. which is now history. i am also suprised of the same people who will not look at the train carnage which was the primary reason for the riots and go to the extant of saying that too was done by the hindus. how sick can they get

I had recently read something told by Nandita das. She said Germany had best roads, best technology at the time of Hitler but that does not clear him from the crime he did against humanity. In the same way is the story of Gujrat. And if u see Raju Ramachandran report he has asked to procecute the CM. What happened in Godhra was not done by Muslims. It was done by bad elements of society whom a civilized society calls criminals, terrorists. They are not muslims. So why should whole community pay the price? I follow politics very closly and I believe if in 2002 the roits were not made Modi would have been prime minister of this country today and BJP in full power. And Mr. Gupta if you had seen the videos and news released during the roits the common policeman said he is part of society he cannot do anything. What will you call this. There were videos exposed by Tehelka those days showing off everything. We cannot go blind to that. We are indians. All political parties are root cause of our problems. Go to karnataka and find out how is the BJP doing there. Mr Advani came with rath yatra and no BJP minister except few attended. Please Mr. Gupta put things properly and analyse the situation

What about the unfortunate ones who were burned alive. These liberals do not ever shed a tear for them simply because of being Hindu. Perhaps time is right for the BJP to snap times with opportunist regional parties and go it alone.

Good article. What choice does India have if we all indians agree to bring in "inclusive growth" In history of mankind only 2 countries have crossed 3 20 million,(usa) let alone 1 billion.(China & India).Unless we have a dedicated incorruptible leader of proven capability WHO takes over the reigns you can right off so called DEMOCRATIC INDIA. IRRESPECTIVE OF ACTIVISTS LAWYERS, ALL TRYING THEIR BEST MILLIONS IN INDIA NOW RECOGNISE THE TRUE SHRI MODIJI & HIS CAPABILITIES.

S.C & GUJ COURTS WILL STAND BY HIM & MOST OF ALL 6 CR GUJARATIS. INDIA HAS BEGUN TO LIKE MODI A LOT.
HOW I WISH THE MAMMOTH BJP AT DELHI WENT AFTER ALL THE SCAMS & BLACK MONEY ABROAD WITH THE SAME ZEAL AS THESE WASTEFUL ACTIVISTS. .

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME WITH ALL THESE ELECTIONS ,ESPECIALLY U.P & LOOK AT THIS STATE AFTER 63YRS. CONGRESS RULED 50 ODD YRS.

INDIANS WAKE UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE, WE CANT AFFORD TO KEEP SHRI MODIJI AWAY FROM DELHI, THE EARLIER HE TAKES OVER THE BETTER.
