altTwo sulking allies played party-pooper as UPA celebrated three years in office on Tuesday. The absence of Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi took the fizz out of the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to mark the occasion. Another supporting party BSP was also conspicuous by its absence.

Sonia snubs Sangma, dents President hopes

He may have been endorsed by two Chief Ministers as Presidential nominee, but Congress president Sonia Gandhi refused to meet PA Sangma on Tuesday.  Sangma has met leaders of various political parties to canvass for his candidature during the last few days. Sonia is the first important leader to deny him appointment.

At least 25 persons were killed and 43 others injured when a Bengaluru-bound Hampi Express train hit a stationary goods train near Penukonda railway station in Anantapur district in the wee hours of Tuesday. Sixteen of the victims were burnt alive when one of the bogies caught fire under the impact of the collision.

Rupee free-fall continues; dives to 55.47/dollar

In what is being seen as a free-fall, for the fifth consecutive day, the beleaguered rupee hit a record low of 55.47 before ending at 55.39 against the dollar, owing to continuous demand for the American currency from importers, especially oil refiners, even as foreign fund flows remained muted.
