Andhra Minister’s son, three others detained at airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials have detained the son of State Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana and relatives of two MLAs on Wednesday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad for evading the customs duty on the goods they had brought with them from Dubai.

Those detained and questioned include Phaninder, the son of the Minister for Cooperation Kanna Lakshminarayana, MLA Bhikshapati Goud’s son Ravi Yadav, and Lakshma Reddy, brother of another MLA B Raji Reddy.and another person.

The group, which had returned from London via Dubai in the wee hours of Tuesday, allegedly brought foreign liquor, wrist watches and other goods worth `50 lakh but did not declare it on arrival.

The DRI officials detained the group just as they came out of the airport and questioned them for about five hours.

Sources said that efforts were being made at the higher levels to get the group released by paying the customs duty on the imported goods.
