Borders sealed, 7,000 to stand guard as Dehradun votes

In order to ensure incident-free franchise on polling day, security forces have sealed the international borders with Nepal and Tibet Autonomous Region and the inter-State borders with Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Above 7,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in Dehradun district. The inter-State and international borders will be sealed for two days to prevent movement of anti-social elements during the Assembly election in the State.

“We have stepped up vigil along the border, patrolling has been intensified and a close watch is being kept on the movement of people and vehicles in the area to foil infiltration by anti-social elements,” Uttarakhand DGP JS Pandey said.

He added that all security officials deployed on the borders would remain there till the polling ends. He added that security personnel can check and frisk any person appearing suspicious. However, citizens will not face unwanted harassment due to checking.

“A special vigil is also being maintained at the Nepal border to prevent anti-national elements from crossing over and creating problems,” he said.

The DGP added that two cameras have been installed at strategic points to further improve vigilance. “We want a peaceful, free and fair election in the State and prevent violence. A large number of security personnel has been deployed in the State,” added Pandey.

A police officer said on condition of anonymity that reports of suspicious activities have been received in border areas of Rimkhim and Barahoti in Chamoli district near Tibet. This area had not witnessed any major incident since the 1962 conflict with China.

Police check posts have been set up at important points including Shimla Bypass Road, Nepali Farm, Jakhan and Asharodi where vehicles will be checked right till Monday evening.

SSP GN Goswami said, “Police check posts were set up at the major intersections of State Capital from Saturday evening. Police will frisk vehicles though there are no restrictions on moving of private vehicles even on the day of polling. People are free to move around but we request them to cooperate.”
