Apart from filing a chargesheet, the CBI has also announced a reward of `10 lakh to anyone providing information that can lead to his arrest. Jain has also been declared a proclaimed offender in the fake encounter case.
Jain, a 1978 batch IPS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, has been on the run ever since the CBI filed a chargesheet against him on June 4 last year for allegedly killing liquor smuggler Dara Singh in 2006. Jain was heading the Special Operations Group of the Rajasthan Police at the time.
This is for the first time in the history of Indian Police Service that an officer of such a stature has been declared a proclaimed offender, carries a cash reward and has also had his passport revoked.
The CBI produced the chargesheet against him before the External Affairs Ministry for revocation of his passport and was compiling data to get a Red Corner Notice issued against him from the Interpol, according to official sources who also informed that Jain is suspected to be living somewhere in Singapore after fleeing the country.
Besides Jain, CBI also announced a cash reward of `5 lakh each against Inspectors Rajesh Chowdhury and Zulfikar and Assistant Sub Inspector Arvind.
The CBI, in its chargesheet, had alleged that Dara Singh was taken into illegal custody by SOG officials from Jaipur Airport and was taken to a lonely place near Amber on the outskirts of the State capital where he was kept hostage till October 23, 2006 after which he was killed in a planned manner.
“The circumstantial evidence shows clearly that Dara was murdered in cold blood by SOG personnel and the same was duly monitored by the ADG of Police, A K Jain, SP SOG, A Ponnuchammi and Additional SP, Arshad Ali along with other officials...,” the chargesheet alleged.
