Toilets to be built in 90L rural houses by ’19

In the State, toilets will be constructed in 90 lakh rural houses by year 2019. A one-day workshop was held on Thursday to chalk out a strategy for meeting this target through Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan.

Additional CS Aruna Sharma said that State has to be sanitised by 2019. United efforts should be made for this. She said that officers should not be content with construction of toilets, but should also motivate people to change their behaviour. Villagers should be apprised of importance of sanitation. Gram Panchayats should be selected to rid them of open-area defecation by constructing toilets.

Sharma added that it should also be ensured that villages have proper system for flushing out water and arrangements for disposal of garbage. Secretary Sanjeev Kumar Jha shared field experiences regarding sanitation.

Throwing light on strategy for campaign, State Programme Officer Swachchh Bharat Mission Hemwati Verman dwelt at length on activities and achievements of Rajya Swachchhata Mission through a Power Point presentation. She also shared a number of novel experiments being made by various districts in the direction of sanitation.

UNICEF’s Programme Manager Manish Mathur informed about importance of sanitation and inter-relation within insanitation and diseases.

In the second session, Feedback Foundation’s Ajay Sinha informed about efforts to bring about community awareness on sanitation. Representatives of various districts gave presentations about action plans of their respective districts.
