Warne returns as mentor for Royals in IPL
new delhi: Australian spin great Shane Warne on Tuesday returned to Rajasthan Royals as team mentor, 10 years after he famously led the side to the IPL title in the inaugural edition. Warne was the captain-cum-coach of the side which exceeded expectations by winning the trophy in 2008. Royals, who will be playing the IPL this season after serving a two-year ban, announced the 'homecoming' of the 48-year-old. "I am very happy and excited to be back with the Rajasthan Royals who I believe hold a very special place in my cricketing journey. I am overwhelmed by the love and affection showered on me by the franchise and the fans," said Warne. "We have a strong, young and energetic bunch of boys and I am looking forward to work with them."
Maria crashes out in Qatar Open 1st round
doha: Five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the Qatar Open on Monday, dumped out in three sets by outsider Monica Niculescu. The Romanian, ranked number 92 in the world, 51 places behind the Russian, won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In a match lasting more than two and a half hours, Sharapova hit 52 unforced errors as opposed to just 17 from Niculescu. In blustery conditions, Sharapova also struggled to get to grips with the 30-year-old Niculescu's distinctive style, which relies heavily on a sliced forehand. The former world number one, twice a winner in Doha, had been given a wildcard into the draw and was one the tournament's major attractions.
India win silver at Asian Games basketball test
jakarta: The Indian men's team bagged the silver medal at the Asian Games 5x5 basketball test event here. The India side went down fighting 68-78 to hosts Indonesia at the Istora Sanayan Hall, Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex to finish runners-up in the invitational tournament. The hosts thus avenged their loss against their opponents a few days back, which was India's first victory of the tournament. Considering that India started their campaign with a 72-79 loss against Thailand, the second-place finish could be considered a creditable one. The first quarter of the game saw both the teams competing neck and neck but Indonesia took a single point lead over India. The hosts increased the lead even further in the next two quarters, making it 58-45.
Karmakar ruled out of Commonwealth Games
new delhi: India's top gymnast Dipa Karmakar has been forced out of the upcoming Commonwealth Games owing to the career-threatening knee injury she picked up last year, her coach Bisweshwar Nandi said on Tuesday. "She is not yet ready for a tournament like the Commonwealth Games. So, the target is to make her fully ready for the Asian Games (August 18-September 2)," Nandi told PTI. Karmakar, the first Indian female to compete in the Olympics where she finished a historic fourth in the women's vault at the 2016 Rio Games, opted out of the CWG trials taking place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here. The Gold Coast Games take place from April 4-15. "She is fit but needs more time to be competition-ready. I would not call it a setback and she has taken it very sportingly," added the coach. She had undergone an ACL surgery in April last year and is continuing to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Now that Jacob Zuma has finally exited, the African National Congress, which has fallen a long way from its glory days, has one last chance to rebuild its reputation before next year’s election. Whether the ANC is the best bet for South Africans is a different question altogether As a passer-by in the upscale Johannesburg suburb of Saxonwold observed, the South African Police would never have raided the enormous, high-walled compound...
