Chhetri hat-trick sets up BFC win

Bhubaneswar: Star India captain Sunil Chhetri struck a hat-trick as Bengaluru FC beat Neroca FC 3-1 to book a semi-final spot in the inaugural Super Cup football tournament here on Friday. Chhetri scored in the 13th, 55th and 90+4 minutes while Pritam Singh (45+3) pulled one back for Neroca. The game began with Bengaluru FC pressing hard for an early lead and were soon rewarded for their consistent attacks in the 13th minute when Chhetri nod the ball home with a spectacular header. BFC pressed hard right from the start of the second half. They struck soon through their captain Chhetri again in the 55th minute. Neroca, who sealed their quarterfinal spot by defeating Kerala Blasters after coming from behind hopes were dashed when Chhetri struck his third goal of the game.

No VAR for 2018/19 Pl season

london: The Video Assistant Referee system (VAR) will not be used during the 2018/19 English Premier League season, officials announced on Friday. Trials of VAR in English cup competitions this season have proved controversial and even though the technology is set to be used during this year's World Cup in Russia, Premier League chiefs believe further tests are needed. The decision was made at a Premier League shareholders meeting in London on Friday, when all 20 top-flight clubs voted. "Premier League clubs have  agreed to continue advanced testing of VAR throughout season 2018/19," said a league statement. "The decision came after comprehensive discussions regarding the progress made in VAR trials in English football, and key learnings from the many competitions using it elsewhere.

Yuki, Ramumar in Taipei Challenger S/F

taipei: India's top singles players Yuki Bhambri and Ramkumar Ramanathan are heading for a summit showdown after reaching the semi-finals of the $150,000 Taipei Challenger event, here. Fourth seed Yuki beat local qualifier Chien-Hsun Lo 6-4, 6-2 while sixth seed Ramkumar dispatched third seed and world number 98 Israel's Dudi Sela with the same scoreline. Yuki will next face eight seed Japanese Tatsuma Ito while Ramkumar is up against Go Soeda, also from Japan.

Lahiri shoots 72, lies T-69th

Hilton Head:  Anirban Lahiri returned to action after three weeks but was unable to make any significant impression as he carded one-over 72 in the first round of the RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour. Lahiri, who was unable to get into the Masters for the second year, had one birdie and two bogeys, all in the first five holes, before he went through 13 straight pars at the Par-71 Harbour Town Golf Links. The 30-year-old Indian, who has slipped to 86th in World Rankings, is lying Tied-69th and will need to shoot a steady second round to stay on for the weekend.
