Even though the policy aims to benefit the players, former India opener Akash Chopra is not satisfied with the team’s tactics. “I am for the rotation, but the way it is being done is not right. The rotation policy aims to keep everyone in the loop. But why limit it to the openers? It should also be implemented for the middle-order also,” Chopra said on the sidelines of a promotional event.
He criticised the fact that in-form players were not being given enough time on the field. “Gambhir is currently in good form, but he will probably be rested for the next game, that is not good. The rotation is being done without a specific method,” said Chopra.
The Rajasthan batsman supported the idea of giving players like Manoj Tiwary a chance to show their prowess in the Indian middle order. But, when queried about Rohit Sharma’s and Suresh raina’s consistent failure with the bat, he said that they had shown their potential to deserve these chances.
“How long he (Manoj Tiwary) is going to warm the benches?” Chopra asked.
“Rohit and Raina have earned their chances. They have been consistent performers for the team in the past. If you look at Rohit, he was Man Of The Tournament in both home and away series against West Indies, so to say he is not performing will be a bit harsh. Raina too has been a good contributor to the team. They should be given a long enough rope to make a comeback,” he insisted.
Chopra also supported Sehwag, who has failed to give India a sound start in the series.
“There are only two batsmen in the history of the game to have scored a double century in the ODIs. So to say he (Sehwag) can not make the runs is unfair. He will get back to form. He needs an extended run. He should be given four-five matches without a break and then a call should be made,” said Chopra.
