The sports activities increased remarkably in Madhya Pradesh in the past seven years. In these years, the department scaled new heights, a number of new talents have come up and the State youth participated in several national and international events bringing laurels to Madhya Pradesh.
Efforts are being undertaken in a phased manner to place the State in the first row in the sports sphere. Apart from expansion of sports infrastructure as per international standards, sportspersons are also being encouraged to enable them perform to the best of their talents in national and international tournaments.
The results of efforts to make Madhya Pradesh a leading State in the sports arena have also started to come to the fore. In record-breaking performance, players of the State won 103 medals in the National Games-2011 held in Jharkhand. These included 25 gold, 32 silver and 46 bronze medals.
On the initiative of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, 65th International Obaidullah Gold Cup Hockey Tournament was organised in hockey's nursery Bhopal. Twelve countries including Malaysia and Bangladesh took part in the tournament. Besides, national-level equestrian, basketball, swimming, gymnastics and taekwondo competitions were also organised.
21st National Kayaking and Canoeing Championship was held for the first time in Bhopal during the year. In a record performance, Madhya Pradesh won 40 medals in the championship. Players of State Equestrian Academy won overall championship by winning 34 medals in the National Show Jumping and Madhya Bharat Horseshow at Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh won silver medal in 37th National PYKA Women Sports Utsav in basketball. Madhya Pradesh also won 59 medals in third Central Zone Taekwondo Competition.
Amit Palaniya, Latika Bhandari and Rajkumari Rathore entered the qualifying round for London Olympics. Madhya Pradesh emerged as the new champion in the National Sub-Junior Hockey Championship. Madhya Pradesh emerged as overall champion by winning 12 medals in 24th Senior All-India Karate Championship.
Ace badminton star Saurabh Verma was one of the successful athletes of the State, who has increased his international ranking from 243 to 70th in his very first year of international career. He has thrashed several international renowned badminton stars. He has notched Berlin International Challenge Trophy and played quarter final of Thailand Open Grand Prix and Tata International Open Challenge Badminton cup.
Kamal Chawla of Madhya Pradesh has won bronze medal in World Snooker Championship held at Bangalore recently. Kamal Chawla is fifth seed in international ranking. Notably, Kamal is only players of the State, who has notched up medal in world championship. Kamal Chawla has been honoured with top sports award 'Vikram Award' of the Madhya Pradesh Government this year. Earlier, the Sports Department had sent Kamal Chawla to London for special coaching.
Like Saurabh Verma other sportspersons of the State like Amit Kumar Pillania Rajkumari, Versha Verma, Navdeep Rathore and Oshin Tanvi (shooting), Abarar Khan, Latika Bhandari, Arjun Singh and Arati Khakal (taekwondo), Kamil Kayum Khan (kayaking), Krishna Thapa and Maya Paddle (boxing), Paritosh Sharma, Vikas Sharma and Kushal Thapa (karate) among others have represented the country and brought laurels for the nation as well as Madhya Pradesh.
The sportsmen of the State sport academy won several medals in national and international scenario.
In the second trimester (April-June) of the year 2011, 10 gold and a silver medal were won, in the third trimester (July-September), 11 gold, 10 silver and 16 bronze medals were obtained and in the final trimester (October-December) of the year a staggering 50 gold, 52 silver with 32 bronze medals were received.
Sailing player Shikhar Garg of State Water Sports Academy won silver medal for team racing in International Sailing Regatta (Sail the Gulf-2011) in optimist class. State's player Kamil Qayyum Khan won silver medal in Asian Canoeing-Kayaking Championship in Tehran.
Players of the State won 15 medals in International Karate Championship in Goa. Besides, State's boxer Tara Singh won bronze medal in Inter-zone National Super Cup. Girls of the State won silver medal for the first time in National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship.
During the award distribution ceremony held at Tatya Tope Nagar Stadium, the Chief Minister had announced that the price money of the reputed State sports award would be increased from this year. Price money of Ekalavya Award and Dronacharya Award has been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, while Vikram and lifetime achievement award have been increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
In addition, price money of reputed All India Obaidullah Gold Cup Hockey tournament had also been increased by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan from Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 11 lakhs in 2011.
How to exercise software?
The Sports and Youth Welfare department has come out with a new and innovative software which has nearly 9,000 different types of exercises which are illustrative and videos of complete range of exercises are also available.
Bhopal District Sports Officer, Vikas Kharadkar of the TT Nagar stadium informed that there are sections in which the exercise of region, muscle and complete body sections are given. Further, the exercise is again divided according to the level of difficulties. The trainers are learning about the software and in the next phase, the academy is going to provide this software to the every sportsperson of the academy.
