Death of a large number of crows and pigeons at several places in Umerkote town and its neighbourhood areas has triggered a bird flu scare here.

Hundreds of dead crows and pigeons were seen lying dead in Umerkote town and many villages under Umerkote block during the last two days.

“We just received a report about death of birds. A team of veterinarians have rushed to the area to initiate remedial Measures,” said Umerkote Tehsildar Nirajan Behera.

Meanwhile, due to lack of awareness, fear-stricken people threw carcasses in the open, which were then devoured by stray dogs and other animals. “No step has been taken by the district administration to create awareness in dealing with bird carcasses. Ignorant villagers threw them anywhere, causing health hazards,” alleged Bipin Hial, an advocate of Umerkote Bar.

Village leader Rupshing Majhi said people have been advised not to eat fowls even as poultry business in the area has come to a standstill.
