Two key political parties including ruling SAD-BJP and Opposition Congress are eyeing Amritsar district, which has 11 constituencies, maximum in the Majha region.
From big rallies to bringing in party’s stalwarts, the political parties are making last ditch efforts to woo the voters before the State goes to Assembly polls on January 30.
Also, taking no chances in the 11 Assembly segments, the Congress and SAD-BJP has fielded well known faces from the Assembly segments.
Out of 11 Assembly seats, nine are with SAD-BJP and two with the Congress at present. This time, SAD-BJP is looking forward to repeat the commendable performance again, while the Congress would be contended with any number more than three in Amritsar.
The stakes are high for all the constituencies in Amritsar and the political parties are all out to wrest maximum number of seats here. Amritsar has five urban constituencies, including Amritsar central, north, south, east, west and six rural Assembly segments.
Amritsar (east) constituency would witness a tough ballot between Amritsar MP Navjot Singh Sidhu’s wife Dr Navjor Kaur Sidhu, Congress' Sunil Dutti and an Independent Simarpreet Kaur Bhatia. All the three candidates are first-timers in the Punjab Assembly polls.
On Amritsar (central) seat, Congress heavyweight leader OP Soni is giving a tough ballot fight to BJP’s Tarun Chugh. After holding an impressive record of winning thrice in a row in the Assembly polls from Amritsar (West), Soni has been fielded from Amritsar (central) seat this time.
Amritsar (north) seat would see BJP sitting MLA Anil Joshi in a close poll fray with Congress Karamjit Singh Rintu. Joshi is toiling hard to retain his seat for the second time in the Assembly polls.
Punjab deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s brother-in-law and youth Akali Dal president Bikramjit Singh Majithia from rural constituency of Majitha is contesting the electoral bout against new entrant Congress' Shailender Jit Shelly and Congress rebel Sukhjinder Raj Singh Lalli Majithia. Bikramjit is sitting MLA of Majithia constituency and hopes to do well again with the Congress' rebel in the ballot tussle.
From Amritsar (south) constituency, SAD rebel Gurpartap Singh Tikka, Congress' Jasbir Singh (Dimpa) and SAD’s Inderbir Singh Bolaria are locked in a triangular fight.
To woo the electors of Amritsar, the political parties are pulling in a galaxy of star campaigning in Amritsar. For Congress, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blew the poll bugle in a hurried visit to Amritsar. Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit is also scheduled to address public rally here.
While for the BJP, former BJP national president Rajnath Singh and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley have taken command of campaigning in Amritsar. Actors Hema Malini and Vinod Khanna have also reached Amritsar to woo the voters.
Interestingly, it is not only the political parties toiling hard to win over the general public in Amritsar but also Team Anna, which visited this most important district in Majha belt continuing their campaign against the Congress and urging the voters to elect a candidate with clean image.
Given the present scenario in various assembly segments, it is a bumpy ride for both SAD-BJP and Congress, who are facing dissenters at most of the Assembly seats in Amritsar.
