Penury drives man to suicide
Dehradun: Unable to meet his daily expanses, a middle-aged man committed suicide by jumping into a canal in Dehradun on Monday. The body was recovered by police and sent for autopsy. According to available information, Ashish Kumar Gupta (29), a resident of Lakkhibagh, Dehradun, committed suicide by jumping into Shakti canal.
Residents informed police after noticing a body floating in the canal near Kulhal power house. After hours of efforts, the body was taken out from the canal and a suicide note was also recovered. City police ruled out foul play.

Speech contest on education system
Dehradun: The Haritash Institute of Education and Social Welfare Society held a speech competition on the subject of an expensive education system and commercialisation of education in Dehradun on Monday. Local social worker Hari Bhandari said that meritorious students belonging to weaker sections of society are being deprived of higher education opportunities because of an expensive education system and commercialisation of higher education in the State.
The Government should take measures for resolving such anomalies so that everyone can get the chance to complete higher education. TM Chaubey, Rajesh Negi, Vijay Thapliyal, Abhishek Yadav, Manish Yadav, SC Maurya, Asha and Shalini were among participants.
