Bengal trekker dead, operation on to rescue stranded group

One member of a group of nine trekkers from West Bengal reportedly died while other members of the group, including 12 porters and two guides, got stuck near Panpatia glacier in Rudraprayag district. The death is reported to have occurred on Monday and by Wednesday five of the group members had managed to reach Madmaheshwar. Meanwhile, a team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is reported to have started an operation to rescue the members of the group still stuck at the high altitude area.

According to information provided by local sources, the group had commenced trekking on June 5 from Khiron river in Chamoli district to reach Panpatia glacier. On June 11, one of the trekkers, AK Das, said to be a senior engineer in the railways is reported to have died. The other members of the group carried his body and trekked from Sajal Sarovar to Ashikital while the remaining members of the groups stayed behind at Panpatia. According to information provided by the state emergency operation centre control room in Dehradun, a total of five members of the group had reached Madmaheshwar.
