Doon to host int’l skiing competition

| | Joshimath | in Dehradun

The State is going to host an international skiing competition during January 2018. In order to start work on preparations for this international-level event, the State tourism and culture minister Satpal Maharaj visited the winter-sports destination of Auli near Joshimath.

A seven-member team from France also arrived here with the Tourism Minister. After conducting a ground inspection of Auli, the Tourism Minister also chaired a meeting with the department officials here. In the meeting, the Minister discussed the present condition of the various equipment and machinery installed at Auli in the past. The officials informed, the Minister about the condition of the ropeway, chair lift, ski-lift and the ski-shop at Auli. The Minister directed the officials concerned to ensure that all the issues are resolved within a period of two months.

The State Tourism and Culture Minister reached the winter-sports destination of Auli at about 11 AM on Wednesday. He first inspected the slope and other features at Auli. An international level skiing competition is slated to be held here at Auli during January 2018. The Minister directed the officials concerned to ensure that all the necessary arrangements are put in place and required repairs made in time for the international competition here. The Minister also inspected the chair lift, ski slope and the artificial snow making machines. After conducting the inspection, the Minister presided over a meeting with the departmental officials in the hall of the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). Discussing the various issues and affected facilities here, the Minister said that the State Government is making efforts to facilitate the required development of Auli. Along with Auli, the authorities are also working on a plan to develop Gaurso for skiing and other winter sports. He directed officials of all the departments concerned to ensure that they work towards fulfilling all the international-level standards required to be observed for holding the international skiing competition here. Speaking on the occasion, the president of the Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) colonel (retired) Jodh Singh Dhillon said that Auli near Joshimath is a unique international level skiing slope in the country. The ski slope at Auli had also been recognised by the International Ski Federation (FSI) during the year 2009. However, no international competitive event has been held here after 2011 whereas such events should be held at least two times in ten years in order to retain the FSI recognition, he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that various equipment were installed and facilities developed at Auli for hosting the South Asian Federation (SAF) winter games here during 2010. However, since after the event, the condition of the facilities here has not been up to the mark as various factors have prevented most of the facilities and expensive equipment from being put to the intended use as desired. It now remains to be seen whether the authorities are able to make the necessary repairs and arrangements in time to meet the international standards to be observed for holding the international level competition slated for early next year.
