Efforts are needed by NABARD, other organisation to check farmers’ suicide: Guv

Efforts are needed by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and other organisations in order to check happenings like the suicides by farmers, said the Uttarakhand Governor Krishan Kant Paul. He was speaking as the chief guest at the 36th foundation day celebrations of NABARD at a hotel here.

Speaking on the occasion, the governor said that increasing the fertility of the soil in Uttarakhand will help check migration from the state. He further suggested that the NABARD should also think of providing loans for agriculture education and research.

The Governor said that recently, there had been incidents of suicide by farmers in many parts of the country. The Government of India had taken the important initiative of giving income security to farmers besides food security .Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the objective of doubling the income of farmers by the year 2022.The governor said NABARD and other organisations would have to play an active role in helping  in the fulfillment of this objective.

He said special attention must be paid to agriculture education in order to increase agricultural production. The gap between agricultural income and non-agricultural income must be reduced. Paul said low income of farmers impacted the entire agricultural sector. Youth must be attracted towards this sector and this would happen if production was increased. The governor further said that education loans were given by commercial banks and NABARD should consider providing loans for agriculture education and research.

He said use of modern techniques and technology must be encouraged in agriculture. He said water conservation must be focused upon and over-use of water and fertilisers must be checked in farming. For this, farmers must be educated and made aware. Information must be also given to them about the cropping patterns .

The Governor congratulated NABARD on its 36th foundation day and said that the bank had played a prominent role in rural and agricultural development .He honoured representatives of self help groups, bank branches and others who had shown commendable performance.

Present on the occasion were cabinet ministers Prakash Pant and  Subodh Uniyal, state minister Dhan Singh Rawat and several senior officers of NABARD.
