Six dead, one critical after consuming hooch in Barabanki

A strong legislation handing capital punishment to those selling spurious liquor in the state, failed to improve the situation as six persons died and one other was battling for his life after consuming hooch in Barabanki on Tuesday night.  

District Magistrate Akhilesh Tewari ordered a probe to confirm whether the incident took place due to spurious liquor or some other reason. All three bodies were sent for autopsy.

As per reports, villagers of Dewa area of Barabanki organised a liquor party on Tuesday night but soon, the condition of five persons deteriorated and they had to be rushed to District Hospital. Four of them - Umesh (22) of Ratanpur area, Mata Prasad (52) of Jasanwara area, Satnam of Salarpur area and Naumi Lal  Gautam (28) of Devgaon area, died soon after reaching hospital. The condition of Naumi Lal’s son Anil Gautam and was reported to be serious. Two more, Kamlesh Kumar (26) hailing from Purva Gaon and Rakesh Kumar (40) of Munni Ka Purva in Deva were also admitted in hospital after consuming liquor. They too died in the early hours of Wednesday.

Agitated with the incident, the locals demonstrated after which the Dewa police lodged a report and said that they were waiting for the autopsy report before acting against the shop owner from where the liquor was purchased. 

Later,. DM Barabanki also enquired the matter and ordered a probe. Sleuths of Excise department too have initiated a separate probe.  However, so far, no action has been taken against any Excise department official or police.
