Presently the security of the railway station is under railway protection force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) which is also claiming shortage of police officials at the station.
GRP station in-charge Rama Kant Raman said, “We have a total of 51 security personnel at the station including four ASIs, seven SIs, 10 Hawaldars and 30 constables. We are providing security to the people coming here with the limited resources we have.”
He added, “We feel shortage of security at night. There should be deployment of more Armed forces at the station as it is a major station of south-east division. There should be coordination between the two agencies working here but there is no coordination between the two.”
With more than 10,000 travellers and 40 passengers trains halting here daily, there is an average of one security man per 142 persons coming here which is not efficient. RPF consists of a total of approximately 25 security personnel along with two sniffer dogs.
Inspector of RPF RK Sao said, “We have a severe shortage of manpower as we are working with only 50 per cent of security men at the railway station. Earlier our area of jurisdiction was limited but now as our area of jurisdiction has been increased we desperately need double the manpower.”
The southern railway division is facing crisis of manpower as claimed by the inspector of the RPF. He said, “As the area of jurisdiction been increased we are unable to provide security in most of the cases as we have shortage of manpower. Recruitment process is not been done by the Indian Railways and if done will also not work as there is severe shortage.”
However, Sao said, “Although we have crisis of persons at the station we are performing our duty very well and the crime rate at the station has decreased at the station.”
