Asian countries mostly hit by the menace of viral diseases, especially Chikungunya, Dengue, H1N1 virus and Bird Flu prevalent in recent years would soon get to a possible end.

An initiative taken by Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, in collaboration with Department of Bio-technology, Government of India and Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany is progressing to find out the drug.

The project initiated under Dr Jeremy P Carver, founding president and CEO of International Consortium on Anti Virals and emeritus professor at Trent University, Canada had been working hard on the discovery of delivering low cost anti-viral drugs for Asian and European countries for curing the fatal disease.

Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of BIT Mesra, Dr BN Sinha and his team of research workers — Dr Venkatesan,  Dr Manik, Dr Arijit Basu, Surendra and Ajay in Ranchi have been working consistently on the project.

“Last year in November I visited the University of Luebeck in Germany for intensive discussions on the ongoing project regarding the discovery of drug for curing the viral disease, which has spread at a massive scale into Europe after affecting the Asian countries,” said Dr Sinha.

Dr Sinha added: “The Indo-German projects have been funded by both the Governments — India and Germany. Such projects will also enhance collaboration between Canadian university and BIT Mesra for other such global research projects.”

Dr Jeremy Carver, who also chairs the Advisory Board of the National Research Council of Canada’s Institute for Biological Sciences and is an Adjunct Professor at Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto has come up with the idea of inducing bio-technological adaptations for the new inventions.

The project would enable possibilities to discuss the strategies for collaboration with BIT in different area(s) of research. Though, Dr Jeremy was unable to come to the institute for the purpose this year, he has promised to visit BIT during his next visit to India soon, informed Dr Sinha.

Dr Sinha who was recently in New Delhi for the 10th symposium of ICAV in collaboration with International Centre for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology during February 7-10, delivered his speech on ‘Structure based discovery of Anti-virals for the treatment of Chikungunya virus infections’, giving the brief status of his Indo-German project on Chikungunya and Dengue.
