Members of Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal were all over the State capital opposing the celebration of Valentines Day on Tuesday.

The Bajrang Dal activists dragged couples out of Nakshatra Van where they were also reported to have slapped couples and were made to do sit-ups holding their ears. The amusement park had to close down for the day due to the incident.

City SP Ranjeet Prasad said, “Police were deployed at different places to keep a check. No accident or offensive incidents have been reported. But if people on bikes chant slogans, we cannot send them to prison.”

The self styled moral activists were on the prowl through out the day. The activists later visited Tagore Hill, Rock Garden, Firayalal, Piska More and other localities in the city. The generally crowded parks wore a deserted look on the day. Motorcycle-borne activists were seen doing rounds of the city chanting slogan ‘Valentines Day Murdabad’.

Manoj Kumar Puttu, media in-charge of Vishwa Hindu Parishad expressed his views about corrupt western influence, “Days like this are spoiling our youth. We are a country imbibed with strong moral values and this is an insult to our values. This is vulgarity in the name of love. We need to stop this or else we will lose our cultural heritage.” When asked about their aggressive approach, he said “We are never violent. We do not insult women. In fact we requested them to move out.”

A nine-year-old girl at Tagore Hill was seen weeping after a confrontation with the Bajrang Dal activists who marched the streets in search of the youths celebrating the day.

The threats issued by the Bajrang Dal seemed to have worked as going by past experience many couples avoided going out to the favoured spots.
