Eight people were killed and two seriously injured when their vehicle plunged 20 feet off a bridge in Dumka on Monday. Police said that the Commander jeep coming from Bhagalpur loaded with newspapers, overturned near Langal village in Dumka after the driver lost control over it and fell down the bridge.

“Apparently the vehicle got imbalanced after the driver lost control over it early in the morning at around 4 – 5 am and it fell off the bridge,” said Dumka SP Kaushal Kishore. Eight out of 10 persons on board died on the spot while condition of remaining two persons was still critical till late in the evening, he added.

“The two injured persons have been admitted to Sadar Hospital in Dumka,” said the SP. The commando, loaded with newspapers, was going towards Dumka from Bhagalpur in Bihar and the driver was said to have taken 8 passengers on board for some extra money on the way, he added.

Incidentally, poor visibility had also killed eight students, including a lady, when the SUV they were travelling in, collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite side at Jardaha More near Dumka last month. Eight students, aspiring for the post of Panchayat Secretary, were going towards Deoghar from Dumka in the SUV to appear in the competitive examination conducted by Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission.
