Rasagola existed in Odisha before 8th century: Govt’s expert committee

The syrupy sweet Rasagola existed in Odisha before the eighth Century, the experts’ committee formed by the State Government is learnt to have claimed in its report.

However, the committee in its report has advised the Government for more research on the claim.

Moreover, the experts have claimed that Rasagola is cited in the Dandee Ramayana, the Odia adaptation of the Valmiki Ramayana by saint poet Balarama Das, the eldest of the Panchasakhas, in the 15th Century.

Science and Technology Minister Pradeep Kumar Panigrahi has directed the Director of Biotechnology to gather facts on the claim. The Director of Biotechnology has begun work on this count, sources said.

Further, the Dandee Ramayana has featured in World e-Book of 1921 published by the Calcutta University which has mention of Rasgola’s association with traditions and practices associated with Lord Jagannath, claimed scholar and researcher on Jagannath cult and practices Asit Mohanty.

Besides, the State MSME Department has begun processing for Geographical Indication (GI) of the Pahala and Salepur Rasagola brands.
