Committee in place to probe school’s lapses

The brutal murder case of 7-year-old Pradyuman Thakur, a second standard student of the Ryan International School and a resident of Shyam Kunj, has left the parents across the district shell shocked. They were asking questions on glaring security lapses on part of the school administration. Education Minister of Haryana Ram Bilas Sharma is likely to address media on Sunday. Meanwhile, angry parents held a candle light march in front of the school campus on Saturday evening.

The parents, relatives and neighbours of the victim have raised questions over the security lapses that led to the killing of the boy inside the school campus. The Gurugram district administration on Saturday announced a committee to find out whether there were any slip-ups and promised to take strict action against the school administration once the report is submitted by the three-member committee by Monday.

“The committee will also investigate whether any such incident had happened in the school premises earlier. Also, the committee will collect all data related to the security norms as prescribed by the State Government," Deputy Commissioner, Vinay Pratap Singh said.

Pradyuman's murder has left many questions unanswered as there were gaping holes in the security system of Ryan International School.  According to sources, the first lapse was that the school administration has installed more than 16 CCTV cameras in the campus but none of them is of good quality. Also, the cameras were neither installed at vantage points not were functional.

The second lapse was the school administration didn't follow the verification process of their class IV staff. Accused Ashok Kumar was working with the school since February this year. But on the day of the incident, the school authorities had asked for his voter Identity card from his family members for his verification.

The third lapse was that the school hired the class fourth staff like drivers, conductors, gardeners and sweepers from third parties without proper verification.

The fourth lapse was the school didn't deploy any female attendant in the school also the entire school staff, including children, teacher and the lower staff, used the common toilet.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner said the services of a private security agency hired by Ryan International School has been suspended and the district authority ordered to conduct a security audit of all schools in Gurugram.

He said the school management has ordered the suspension of the school principal and the action has been taken. "An investigation is going on and police have arrested an accused. I hope that justice will be served," the DC said.

“We need proper investigation by the CBI against the school administration. They took a huge amount from the parents but if we talk about the facilities they didn't do anything. We also urge the Government they should be cancelled the licence of the school and also seal the school campus”, said Varun Thakur, Pradyuman's father. "These high-end schools hire teachers after doing a psychological profile, why these chinks in the system when it comes to drivers, conductors, peons, maids and housekeeping staff? said another parent whose daughter studies in the same school. "Why can't proper screening be done when hiring everyone who comes in contact with the children" he further said.
