Govt OK’s Rs 50,000 cr to unclog Delhi, NCR

| | New Delhi

The Centre on Wednesday gave in-principle nod to infrastructure projects worth Rs 50,000 crore to decongest Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who promised all possible help to decongest roads in Delhi and NCR.

The projects include the much-awaited Rs 900 crore Kalindi Kunj Bypass; an elevated East-West Corridor connecting Anand Vihar ISBT to Peeragarhi, via ITO to decongest Vikas Marg, worth Rs 6,000 crore; Rs 35,000 crore Urban Extension Road-I and II (UER-I & II); Rs 350-400 crore flyover connecting New Delhi Railway Station to Rajghat to decongest Ajmeri Gate and Asaf Ali roads; an elevated corridor connecting Badli Metro Station to an area near Inderlok Metro Station along the Western Yamuna Canal (length and cost yet to be decided) and the Mehrauli-Badarpur corridor worth Rs 700 crore.

According to sources, Gadkari directed the Delhi Government to provide details of the Kalindi Kunj Bypass and said he would take up the issue with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath soon.

The 13-km Kalindi Kunj bypass project, which has been on hold for 24 years,  will have 5.5 km elevated road. The Bypass, aimed to decongest Ashram Chowk and Mathura Road, was in a limbo over the transfer of some tracts of land under the UP Government, which has now agreed to transfer the land to Delhi PWD soon for the purpose.

The NHAI in its presentation proposed the construction of UER-I to connect Rajokri, Bijwasan, Najafgarh, NH 8, NH 10 and NH 1 if land owning agency DDA provided land to them. The Eastern leg of UER-I will take off from Maa Anandmayee Marg and bypass Mehrauli and Rajokri. The road will have a Right of Way (ROW) of about 100 metres.

The second phase of Urban Extension Road (UER-II) will connect Vasant Kunj through the existing Dwarka Link Road, Najafgarh linking NH 8, NH 10 and NH 1.

Another NHAI plan is for the construction of the Link Road from Vasant Kunj to Aya Nagar on the Gurugram-Mehrauli (NH 236) road. This will serve as an extension of Vivekananda Marg and Nelson-Mandela Marg. It will provide a direct connection between NH 236 and NH 8 and connect Bhikaji Cama Place, Aya Nagar and NBRC gate via Vasant Kunj.

The East-West elevated corridor connecting Anand Vihar ISBT to Peeragarhi Chowk would be a 25-30-km-long corridor that is expected to cost nearly Rs 6,000 crore and will be completed in three years from the date of commencement of the project.

As per the proposed alignment, the corridor will begin at the Anand Vihar Railway Station and run parallel to Karkardooma and Vikas Marg in East Delhi. In Central Delhi, the corridor will pass through ITO, DDU Marg and New Delhi Railway Station. In the first phase, the corridor will be developed up to Punjabi Bagh and later extended up to Peeragarhi and Tikri Border along the NH 10 in West Delhi.

Environment Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan and other stakeholders, including Members of Parliament from Delhi, State PWD Minister Satyendar Jain, Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal, top officials of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh Governments attended the meeting. Also present were officials of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Urban Development Department.

During the meeting, officials of Delhi Government, NHAI and DDA made a presentation on how to decongest the national Capital.

Sources said that during the meeting, Harsh Vardhan proposed a flyover from New Delhi Railways Station to Rajghat. If approved, the 4.5-km-long flyover could cost Rs350-Rs 400 crore.

West Delhi MP Parvesh Verma proposed construction of an elevated corridor from Badli Metro Station to Inderlok along the Western Yamuna Canal.

According to officials, the Mehrauli-Badarpur corridor project was conceived in 2013-14 to tackle the ever-increasing traffic volume on the Outer Ring Road. The project has been stuck due to technical reasons and lack of coordination among various Government agencies.

Also discussed were proposals to construct a road from Kakrola Mod to Punjabi Bagh. In addition, proposals such as a North-South corridor from Wazirabad to IGI Airport; extension of the Barapullah elevated road from INA to the airport; extension of Mehrauli-Badarpur Road from NH 2 to Noida Expressway; and an elevated road from Khajuri Khas to Bhopura Border were  also discussed at the meeting.
