Bapu’s Charkha fusioned with technology
Fulfilling the dreams of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having technically better Charkha, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Ahmedabad witnessed the launch of an improved six and eight spindle Charkhas for course count Khadi products. This is also the first technological intervention after the inception of traditional single-spindle course count Charkha.
The Charkha was developed by Khadi Prayog Samiti Ahmedabad, a KVIC unit established in 1958 for technical intervention in Khadi activities. In June 2017, KVIC had given Rs 15 lakh to the Prayog Samiti for research and development in Charkha technology.
Four months ago, KVIC had intervened for technological enhancement in the traditional single-spindle Charkha. The new Charkha would produce more course count Khadi with less drudgery. At present, the course count Khadi thread is produced from traditional single-spindle Charkha, which can produce only four to five hanks per day, resulting into very meager income to the artisans. This new six and eight-spindle Charkhas will produce at least 20 to 25 hanks per day, subsequently increasing the artisans’ income substantially, i.e. 200 and more per day.
