Back Vivacity Class of 2012

Class of 2012

No Dry Eyes

The annual presentation of Lifetime Achievement prizes, trustee's awards and technical Grammys is  an emotional affair.

But this year's event announced by Grammy bigwig Neil Portnow (picture), was especially moving, as many recipients were no longer with us — or are dealing with health issues. The class of 2012 included George Jones, southern rockers The Allman Brothers Band, New Orleans musician and songwriter Dave Bartholomew, bossa nova pioneer Antonio Carlos Jobim, rap trailblazer Gil Scott-Heron.

Diana Ross

Hallelujah! enthused the 67-year-old diva, looking resplendent in a red gown as she accepted her Lifetime Achievement award for a five-decade career that began with The Supremes, continued as a solo artist — and isn't over yet. “It's been such an incredible ride. I'm very happy, very excited, and look forward to going in the studio to make new music,” she said, sparking a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd of music-industry insiders and media.

Glen Campbell

The country legend received a Lifetime Achievement Award, in addition to performing with Blake Shelton and the Band Perry. He revealed last June that he is suffering from Alzheimer's and this will be his first live television performance since he shared the news with his fans. Campbell has received five Grammys over the course of his career. Prior to the show he was asked if he was nervous ad he said, “I realize you are going to make mistakes through life. Just don't make bad ones, you know. I’d rather do live than lip-synch.”
