‘My father taught me how to use a gun!’

Actor Irrfan Khan gets candid with Ritika Arora about Paan Singh Tomaar, working in Chambal Valley, and his next flick, The Amazing Spider-Man

We last saw him in Anees Bazmee’s Thank You. Although the movie failed to impress viewers, its failure did not affect him.

Because Irrfan Khan is an actor who doesn’t worry about getting roles.

On Sunday afternoon Irrfan was in the Capital with director Tigmanshu Dhulia, to promote his movie Paan Singh Tomar.

It is based on the true story of a steeplechase champion who transforms into a bandit.

The film is set to hit the screens on March 2. Irrfan’s co-star in the movie, Mahi Gill, was also supposed to be at the venue. But she didn’t turn up for some reason. Even Irrfan made Delhi media wait for over an hour, and did not even apologise for being late. Bad boy!

We finally caught up, and asked about the movie.

He replied. “It’s a biopic. It took a while to research. Because there was no info on the internet. Even athletes who knew him, refused to provide any information. Some even asked for money.”

The film is set in a small town of Madhya Pradesh, where Paan Singh Tomar lives with his family. He joins a firm called the Bengal Engineers and works to eradicate poverty. He then becomes a runner, and  wins the steeplechase at the National Games for seven consecutive years. He later gives up running and his post of subedar in the Army, goes to Chambal Valley and becomes a brigand.

Irrfan revealed he went through rigorous physical training for the role. “As soon as the script was finalised, I started training for the steeplechase under the national coach Satpal Singh.”

Khan said he also learnt an Madhya Pradesh dialect for the role and winked, “I didn’t have to learn to use the gun, because I learnt to from my father!

Sharing his experience of filming in Chambal Valley, he said “It was definitely a lifetime experience. I won’t say it was easy. But we had everything arranged.”

The actor who walked the ramp for designer Muzaffar Ali on the closing day of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (autumn/winter) said he loves being in Delhi. “I spent precious years of my life here. I remember I once ate paranthas at the dhabas near ITO and was hospitalized owing to a stomach infection.” The 49-year-old concluded by saying he is busy filming an American film, Marc Preston Webb’s The Amazing Spider Man. “It is based on the comic book of the same name.”
