Secrets of a fitness freak

Bipasha Basu would love to come up with a health guide. She tells Divya Kaushik how weak knees from oesteoarthritis made her the passionate health buff that she is today

Most of her peers head for an aroma massage, or some other luxury indulgence, as a break from promotional schedules. But the only thing on Bipasha’s mind is the gym.

She told us, “My flight was supposed to reach the Capital at 11.

“So I called the hotel in advance, asking them to open the gym, and they did.”

The exhaustion of a two-hour work out, and frequent travel, was not visible on Bipasha Basu’s face. She appeared more fit and petite, than she does on screen. Fab in a frilly, short dress.

“That’s the hard work of seven years. It did wonders, and changed my life.”

So, “for a change,” she ordered a cappuccino for herself.

“I prefer green tea. But coffee keeps me awake. I drink loads of water too,” she said.

The actor was in the city to promote her forthcoming film Jodi Breakers, with actors R Madhavan and Omi Vaidya. We thought we caught her in a good mood.

But apparently she is “mostly like this.”

Bipasha said, “I’m a small kid with a big smile. Happy. That’s my main agenda. I don’t sulk. I want to live 100 years and use every moment. What you see on my face is positive attitude.” She added that most people in her profession do not live life to the hilt. “All they do is discuss business, and plan things.”

She added, “I have met great actors who do everything, but don’t enjoy themselves. Movies to me are a profession. Fitness is a passion. I never planned life. The only thing I planned, was to be a doctor, as a kid. But I failed miserably. Since then I have planned nothing. An example was my first film, Ajnabee. If it had been planned, I would not have made a debut in a negative role.”

From the beginning of her career, Bipasha was, “typecast and expected to do certain things heroines get loaded with in Bollywood.” But she says she stood on her own, and proved herself without any extra aid.

“My biggest achievement has been getting respect from people in the fraternity, who understand me. Whatever I am today is because of my hard work and beliefs. She went on, “You cannot expect anything from the film industry. It’s a hero-centric business. And a mammoth task to find good roles for a woman” She went on, “Thankfully, even in the case of multi-starrers, where films were literally raped by critics, I managed to sail through,” Bipasha crossed her fingers and flashed a wide smile.

Basu revealed her affair with fitness did not start well. She was diagnosed with osteoarthritis, and told that she had the, “knees of a 65-year-old.”

“You can imagine what a young girl might go through, if told by doctors that she would not be able to dance, be active, or run. I was devastated and cried for  days. Then I began looking  for solutions. I met the best doctors, physiotherapists and everybody in the business. I read every book on fitness. I have always read a lot. Thanks to that, I know everything about our body system, and how to work out without damaging it.”

She did pilates, aerobics, cardio and bootcamping to stay fit. She also shed some extra weight.

“I want to write about all of this one day. Especially for my female admirers. It is always gratifying to get compliments from women. Men compliment you anyway. And you know why,” she chuckled.

In the past, Bipasha produced a fitness DVD, but clarified that yoga has not been part of her workout.

“It is wonderful. And friends like DN Pande has been forcing me to try. “There was a time I did 108 Suryanamskars at a stretch. It affected my knees. I got a little scared after that,” she said.

Bipasha said she would love to get a spouse like Madhavan. Not because she is promoting her movie. “He balance his life. He works for hours. He skies. He parasails. He hangs out with friends and spends time with his family, taking care of in-laws and parents. I would love to have a guy who  brings such balance to my life too.”
