'Change in both men, women's mindsets needed'

Changes in laws cannot eliminate violence against women. Women across the country need to be made aware of all laws and rights concerning them and they should be financially and politically more empowered to claim their rights, observed National Commission for Women (NCW) member Hemlata Kheria while inaugurating a national seminar on ‘Ending violence against women: A national challenge at Puri on Friday.

She also laid emphasis on change in the mindsets of both men and women to tackle problems like violence against women which has profound social connotations to it.

 Presiding over the seminar, OYSS Women founder Manasi Pradhan urged the NCW member to ensure setting up of more fast-track courts in every district in order to provide speedy justice to women.

Nearly 300 women from across the country attended the conclave and suggested introduction of self-defence training in educational institutes starting from school level.

Among others, former Samaja editor Manorama Mohapatra, State Bar Council member Bibhudendra Mishra, UGC Emeritus Fellow Dr Tandra Patnaik and Prof NC Mallick shared their views at the event.  men, women’s mindsets needed’
