A distance of mere 7 km creates a sharp difference of 3 to 4 degrees in temperature between Ranchi and Kanke. On one hand where Ranchi sees a minimum temperature of 5 to 6 degrees, Kanke freezes at 1 to 2 degrees. The reason behind this drastic difference is that Kanke has more open areas that the concrete jungle of Ranchi. There is more agricultural land in Kanke than in Ranchi because of which water logging cools the air and promotes winds to blow uninterrupted. Pollution levels also differ. There are two rivers in Kanke too- Jumar and Potpoto that possess large grassland areas. A scientist at BAU said that the temperatures in Dhurwa also fall low, just like Kanke because of less population and infrastructure and presence of Hatia dam in the area. It is because of presence of BAU observatory in Kanke that the temperature of that area gets recorded.
