The National Green Tribunal on Wednesday slammed the Assam Government for delay in preparing a detailed project report on measures to curb growing wildlife casualties due to vehicular movement on the National Highway passing through the Kaziranga National Park.
A Bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests to make clear instructions as to whether or not it proposed to issue any draft notification in relation to Kaziranga Eco-Sensitive Zone. The tribunal’s direction came on a plea filed by environmentalist Rohit Choudhury that opposed the expansion of NH-37 passing through Kaziranga connecting Jakhalabandha to Bokakhat.
NGT also directed the Secretary, Environment and Forest, Assam to file an affidavit stating as to why the report on construction of the road has not been filed.
