The number one clean city of India — Indore has got another milestone to its name. This commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh has reportedly become the first city in India where robot is being used on an experimental basis to control its ever growing and unruly traffic.

The traffic police in association with a private engineering college of the city for the first time has installed a metallic robot at a busy MR 9 intersection on an experimental basis to control the chaotic traffic in the locality.

This robot, which has been designed and manufactured by two professors of an engineering college of the city, — Prof Rahul Tiwari and Aniruddh Sharma — in the past two days since its installation, has been quite successful in controlling traffic in this locality, which most of the time remains chock and block in absence of traffic signals and traffic cop, said Indore range DIG Harinarayanchari Mishra told.

Vehicle riders passing from this intersection were taken aback seeing a life size metallic robot with sensor and number system controlling traffic in the locality with its giant size arms in a fashion similar to a traffic cop. The DIG said since installation of this robot, traffic movement in the locality has been streamlined to a large extent with people willingly following its green and red light signals.

Mishra said with installation of this robot, Indore has become the first city in the country to conduct traffic through robot. He said works on installation of robots to conduct traffic had been continuing on war footing in Dubai where robots would be installed in November this year. However, Indore has taken the lead to use robotic technology for controlling traffic movement. He said after its success at MR 9 junction, steps will be taken to install similar robots at other junctions having large volumes of traffic movements, adding that works are also underway to equip this robot with announcement system and cameras so as to issue chalans to traffic offenders.
