A large number of people from across Jajpur district and other parts of the State converged on the bank of river Baitarani at the famous Dasaswamedh Ghat on the occasion of the Pinda Daan ritual on Saturday.
“All forefathers appreciate a pilgrimage to the Dasaswamedh Ghat by their successors. Once the Pinda Daan is performed in the Baitarani, one achieves salvation. One becomes free of rebirth. If one visits the Baitarani even once and offers Pinda Daan, the forefathers are free from hell and other dreadful destinations and achieve salvation., said Aditya Dash, a priest. As per the Vedas, no work can be performed or taken to the heights of success without the blessings of ancestors. Pinda Daan is the only spiritual way to help the restless deceased souls come to peace, added Dash.
Many devotees blamed the Government for not paying attention towards cleanliness of the riverside and also complained about the lack of clean drinking water facilities.
“By the riverside, there are heaps of garbage lying. “On this traditional occasion, about 30,000 people gathered on the river bank. But many faced difficulties to take bath after offering Pindas, said Madan Mohan Das, a priest, adding that the river should be maintained well like any other pilgrimage site.
“Trees should be planted here. There should be facility of clean drinking water,” said Smarajit Mohanty, a local.
