Tuesday, 02 October 2018 | Anup Sharma | Guwahati

Tension has gripped newly created Hojai district in Assam following reports of some school students feeling dizziness after administrating of Measles Rubella vaccination on Monday.

An Irate public attacked the school where the vaccination was carried out and injured health workers who had carried out the vaccination programme.

The mob also attacked the security personnel forcing the security personnel to resort to firing of tear gas shells to disperse the mob.

“The mob had damaged five police vehicles by pelting with stones. This forced us to resort to non-lethal means to combat the mob which was over 2500,” said Hojai Superintendent of Police, Ankur Jain.

He said that the agitated mob also attacked the CRPD personnel guarding the NRC seva Kendra nearby.

He said that police have detained five persons in this connection.

The Assam Government has started administering Measles Rubella vaccine under a scheme.

In some districts, the Government agencies has also roped in religious leaders of minority communities to create awareness the upcoming Measles Rubella vaccination campaign and dispelling rumors that it does not contain anything that causes impotency.

In 2017 students in several areas of Assam gave a miss to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccine following rumours about the vaccine that it could lead to infertility spread.
